Problems ripping certain cds to FLAC

Posted by: Bosh on 25 June 2011

For streaming to my Qute/SBLs, I've ripped 1000+ CDs to FLAC using EAC with no problems, however there are a certain proportion for which EAC throws up a "Sync" or "Read" error and will not rip them.

Some are labelled "copy protected" but most are not Using iTunes they rip OK to AAC (low-fi) and Apple Lossless (Qute wont play them). They will also rip with dBPoweramp, Media Monkey and Winamp but in all 3 cases the sound is VERY distorted akin to vinyl with the biggest ever bit off fluff on the stylus.

Any suggestions on a way round this problem?

Are they HDCC? I've noticed this problem with the first track of some HDCC encoded discs. dBPoweramp seems able to rip these ok so maybe download the trial version and see if this works.

Rip then to AIFF with iTunes with Error Correction turned on and then use a program to convert them to FLAC - XLD will do this on a Mac, there must be some free software for a PC that will do the same - I know dbPowerAmp will but you have to buy it - sorry I don't use Windoze so not sure of the various bits of software available.

SJB - I've already tried dbPoweramp with no success, and just tried missing the first track and selecting random tracks for one off burn with no success

Will try the iTunes ripping and converting method

Got it sorted eventually - required a combination of a PC and 2 laptops with both dBPoweramp and EAC for ripping and mp3tag for tagging

There was no logic (to me anyway) to it, just tried another pc/software if it came up with an error. One particularly tricky disc threw and ongoing "read error" and "sync error" during the 3 hour + rip but sounded ok in the end !!

If this is happening on more than 1% of your CDs that are in decent shape, I would investigate your drive.  There may be a problem there.

Also, what kind of error correction have you set it up for....

Every so often I cant get a disc to finish the rip.  Usually because they are badly scratched.  I then rip in Foobar in Burst mode (iTunes style), works every time, but with a click or hitch typically in the offending location.  sometimes not.

Hi, some CDs, though i see it less now with new CDs, have deliberate errors encoded into the CD. This is to try and stop ripping and copying. DBpoweramp has a setting in it's options to try and defeat this. This approach became contentious as it was not compliant red book, and the discs often failed to play in some CDPs.
If the discs appear in good condition this could be the issue.
The only other issue I am aware of is that some CDs use a gold coloured foil instead of silver, which causes issues with reflectivity. Again these rip badly and my CDS3 coulnt play them reliably either.

And the music industry wonders why we wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

On several discs (looked OK - no scratches)  I persisted with which threw up sync and read errors and took upto 3 hours to rip, I did notice the errors on the final report which on some discs occurred at specific intervals eg every 7 seconds, but the resultant FLACs play ok
