iPad and spotify

Posted by: fathings cat on 04 July 2011

My current system is xps2, ndac, serv, controlled from iPad and music stored on net gear nas drives, 252' super cap, 250.2.

Can I use spotify from my iPad. I justbtried to use the software and unable to down load. Searched apps but before purchase would like to check it works.

Any thoughts appreciated

Spotify  have not released a client specific for the iPad yet so you have to use the I phone version instead. The resolution is poor and does not make use of the ipad's larger screen but it works ok for me

Agree with David , my spotify on iPad works fine. Into my ndac/555ps via a USB cable , it's worth paying £10 a month , the quality is pretty good I think it's 320.. Much better than lastfm via the same method which is only £3 a month. Not anywhere near the quality of ripped cd,s via my HDX/ ndac/555ps though ... So a degree of realism is required as per your expectations. Not sure why yours does not work , you can't download it from the Safari browser , you can only download from the APP store , I think only if you pay. Roy

Thanks for your help, now downloaded from app store.
I will probably use to listen before buying on cd or not as the case could be but will consider the premium account.
Thanks again

A bit like watching the f.a.cup final in the 1970,s usual form was to watch the build up on itv then just before kick off switch to bbc1 , usual form in 2011 is to listen to lastfm radio if anything catches your ear then quickly switch over to spotify and if it's on there listen to the albumn and if you like that then buy the cd usually on amazon for something like £4.99 or less .... I use it quite a lot , its a good idea to get your music library scrobbled into both spotify + lastfm and other music sites , I do that via windows media on a pc. Not sure what type of set up you have with wireless Internet , I have a virgin media router ,when playing radio type stations on your iPad When a track finishes the iPad shuts down , as a battery saving option , it used to drive me round the bend , but if you change the wireless setting in your router to WPA2 it stops this happening..... Not completely sure why , something to do with creating constant traffic on the connection , I'm not an expert here and I'm not sure if that's universal either .... But it worked for me. Roy

P.s. In spotify if you want the artist radio feature , where you can choose , for instance - jazz from 1980,s etc , that option is not available on the iPhone/iPad version , I had a slight whinge on their website when I found out..... Roy

Playing Spotify on my PC right now, but the sound is not so good as I would like. Why can not Naim add a spotify function in the new network player, NDX? Would much rather have listened through it instead of a PC. Naim, time to develop further and get some new partners if you do not want to lose the new generation out there?

Regards

I have connected my Sonos system via the digital optical link to the Digital input 3 of my NDX which allows me to listen to Spotify, Napster etc through the NDX. Quality is very good.

Thanks for your answer, but you probably missed my point.
Of course you can do as you have done. But I don´t want to have to take a detour via the Sonos system, etc. thus losing signals outside the Naim system control.
I want to be able to connect directly to the NDX - Spotify and in that way achieve the best sound quality.
Just as Naim did with the iPhone.
Spotify is the largest provider of streamed music in Europe so it should really be in Naim's interest to develop such a function for the NDX.

Naim's time to show that you live up to your high standards!!

Hi Mr. W -

I asked the same question about the NDX a month or so ago, and while a couple of forum members said "good idea", there was no comment from Richard, Adam, Dave or anyone else with close ties to Naim.

I agree that all of the Naim network players, hard disk players and all-in-ones need to support all of the fee-based streaming services (I'm using Rhapsody, but would switch to Spotify if they ever open a US service). My guess is that nothing will happen until Naim supports Airplay...then everything will happen at once.

In the meantime, I've received advice in another thread on two alternatives:

1) an iPod Touch attached to the DAC's rear USB port, and controlled via Remote from an iPad, and

2) Apple TV (future solution for when streaming services themselves support Airplay)

Maybe our best bet is 1) for now, and 2) for later?

Good luck with the "hunger strike" approach of daily bumps.  I doubt it will work, but I do wish you luck!

Hook

PS - To be perfectly honest, between UPnP, iRadio and vinyl, I'm not sure where I'll find the time to listen to streaming services!  So many options -- what a great problem to have!

I have a pc permanently connected to my system (naimnet/digilinx), and use my iphone and an app called 'remoteless' to wirelessly control what I am listening to. This app basically allows you to control spotify on the pc from anywhere in the house

Slightly OT but perhaps useful?

Going a bit 'off-piste'; I use www.we7.com to sample music for free.

It won't work on the iPad though, 'cos it needs 'Flash'.

I think you will find if you are listening to Spotify through your ipad/pod/phone the quality is only 160kps - my understanding is you need the desktop app or a sonos/logitech to stream at 320kps.

Sorry Occean , I'm sure your absolutely right , I'm not an expert in that area , did not mean to deliberately mislead anyone. I have just been listening to Lavi Mera from the music thread , will definitely be getting that on cd or possibly the download. Roy

Hi Hook!

I completely forgot that this is an British forum so daily bumps is probably a waste of time...

Just look how long it took for the British to leave India and then we talk about protests which was a little more than daily bumps ... Well, well you have to take the rough with the smooth....

But now to something much more important, how we get our musicsystem sound as good as possible.

I have now tried your suggestion with an iPod Touch attached to the DAC's rear USB port, and the sound surpasses all expectations so really thanks for your help!

Ps - I really prefer vinyl reproduction. So vivid and it raises a lot of good (and some bad) concert memories from the past.
