End of an era

On July 8th, it will be the last time a Space Shuttle will lift off. Atlantis is scheduled to meet up with ISS for a 12 day mission. Earlier this year, Discovery and Endeavour succesfully completed their last flights.

I think they were beautiful machines... they've been around since I was a kid.

I remember when 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' did a joke headline using that picture (or one like it) saying something like 'Pan Am have announced they have taken a number of their aircraft out of passenger service, apparently they are putting them out to stud.'.

Pan Am, Not the Nine O'Clock News, that puts in perspective how long they have been around.

A good Horizon on BBC4 recently summarising the programmes coverage of the project over the last four decades, no doubt it will be repeated late at night soon. Worth watching for both the the great achievements ad the sad losses.

So, is it now just down to Soyuz? And Virgin. Hmmm.

SpaceX is coming along nicely with its series of launchers which should shake up the big players. Shame to see the shuttle go though. It's a magnificent vehicle.
