New speakers arrive (including pictures)!

System before Wednesday (Bowers & Wilkins 804D2);

B&W804D2

The new speakers (Bowers & Wilkins 803D3) are delivered (170Kg combined weight on the pallet);

Delivery of B&W 803D3 speakers

Speakers are carefully taken up to the music room (2 person job) unpacked and installed;

B&W803D3s in place

......and two different views of the system;

First impressions are great (speakers still bedding in), with more of everything compared with the 804D2s (increased sound stage, extension, control).  My NAP500 also just back from DR upgrade at Salisbury, so many 'settling-down' changes, however already definitely notice a huge step up in terms of performance, 'listenability', grinning and 'toe-tapping'.  Will avoid the HiFi clichés, however the system sounds fantastic!  More to come as things settle down.

803D3s fit in the room superbly (not that much larger than the old 804s), and are still on casters (to allow final position tweaks) before finally locking them down on spikes in the next 2-3 weeks.

Huge thanks and call-out to the good folks (Paul & Ian) at Billy Vee Sound systems for making the magic happen!

Thoroughly enjoying this system - back to listen to it now.......

System looks great. Fond memories of my DM6 pregnant Kangaroos many years ago in a similar room!

Wow...amazed how tidy your boxes are in the loft, puts mine to shame!

Enjoy!

Jason has already mentioned the full Fraim option above. I'd strongly suggest going for it, rather than just the glass and balls. The double base unit will do so much for the 500, and in the context of the overall system the price is very reasonable for the improvement you will get.  Just trade in all the Lite for the pukka rack.

Thanks Nigel - I will try and audition the full Fraim with this system.  Unfortunately at the 252/300 level, I couldn't hear much difference. Between lite and full ....lots of changes since then though.

In the meantime, getting lots of pleasure from this, and it's getting better every day!

Thanks for all for the nice comments and feedback everyone.

Speakers (and DR upgrade) still bedding in, but already the improvements are there in spades; natural bass extension (not forced or 'boomy'), greater dynamic range, lack of noise and general increased enjoyment of music collection.

Had a vinyl-playing friend round last weekend to listen to the system – he was blown away by just a how good a properly executed streaming digital system can sound (we listened to some of his music as well so that he could compare - Little George Sueref and the Blue Stars, Slow Club (Yeah, So-), Laura Veirs (Warp & Weft) and Tamikrest (Chatma)).  His feedback on bass extension, the timing of the music and the top end all beating his red rose amp, SME turntable and any of his Snell/ProAc or Focal Mini Onken speakers.  He wont be changing his system anytime soon (as he still prefers the warmth of his system), but he did find it educational and a lesson in not believing the oft-held pre-conception that digital music is inferior to vinyl - different, yes - inferior, no....

Here's some of the tunes I'm particularly enjoying at the moment;

Yes, the inadvertent 'selfie' is funny - clearly some work to do in Photoshop here!

To RJS, I agree that one should resist saying 'never say never', however for this room with its given size and layout, the end of the 'roadmap' for this set-up is probably where I am now.  Next upgrade would be to move house!

Thought I'd share some photos here of the packing material that I've now safely stored in the loft.  There's a lot of it!!

I'm impressed. I wish the storing of the Naim boxes in my loft looked so neat and tidy.

Your system and listening room look great Geejay. I thought the speakers looked really big, but in the context of your system and room they look perfect. Lovely finish on them.

I'm sure it all sounds amazing. Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks Chris and Mike - listening to music now - playing as much music as possible at the moment.  Bank Holiday weekend ideal for this!

Yes, speakers do fit well in room and don't 'loom' or 'overpower' (either physically or sonically).  B&W have certainly done their homework with these beauties!

Congratulations George,

Love reading threads like this. Great journey and the only path left to enjoy is the music. Well done you. Keep posting please.

Have you played with dispersion panels?One of the speakers is close to the ceiling,does it affect it?

Congrats for that great setup!!

I live in a flat just under the roof (similar to your auditions room) and its acoustic is really tricky. I was warried about the acoustic response of my new GB1i - Unitiqute2 setup, and I nottice that moving my sofa about 40 cm closer to the rear wall the audio quiality increasses dramatically. Have you notice any problem in any specific location of your room?

Thanks Dusty - appreciate the 'like' as well - thank you!

Essad and Javi - have already adjusted the sofa and speakers to optimum position, and none of the reflections or dispersions that you refer to are evident (I've essentially optimised all of this over the 4 years since first setting up the music room).  No need for room treatment, but am going through some minor speaker movement tweaks before locking down the spikes.

Highly irregular shape of the room actually plays to the advantage of reduced standing waves (cf some standard square or rectangular rooms).

Thanks for sharing concerns though.

Not only do you have an amazing system, you have a decent loft space in which to store and organise all the boxes too!  I must be going wrong somewhere, I've had to secrete my Naim boxes throughout different strategic locations around the house

yeah,i'm in the attic too and unexpectedly it behaves much better than my regular shaped living room,but i did have dispersion problems.Upper mids were flaring  when i went  a bit louder.

Awesome set up.  Those B&W's are a wonderful piece of engineering.  I love the old ones you had too, and the old style 803's to be fair! Just awesome!

PS:  I hope that Rad isn't too close to them!

Thank you Lewis.  When I first saw photos the new 800 D3 series on the interweb, I thought how ugly they looked, however 'in the flesh', they look awesome, and make the design of the D2 series look just a little tired.  Also the quality of the sound from the D3 is a significant leap on from the previous series.  Even the 804D3 is a marked improvement from the 804D2.

BTW, no, they are quite a distance from the radiator......
