NAC-N 272 volume "trim"

Posted by: Eloise on 26 May 2016

Can anyone confirm for me that if I use the "Input trim" on the NAC-N 272 that there is no loss of quality.

I find that some inputs need the volume at much higher level, so to save loud bursts from UPnP after watching TV I'd like to set the Digital 4 input to +10 and the UPnP to -5 but don't want to loose quality.

I would set the quietest source on 0 and trim the other, louder sources.
Not a great believer of 'boosting' in a digital domain (although NAIM may have cracked this one).

In real life music it's always better to trim sources... Unless one wants to saturate a pre-amp input tubes to obtain distortion..

That's what I was unsure ... Is the trim in digital domain?

i think I have the happy medium now and have the "TV" input right up (at 10) and other things aren't too loud on 0 trim. Mostly was just curious how it worked (digital or analogue domain).

+1

though I'd be very surprised if there was any d/a involved: the trim works on the analog sources, too, and the analog path is suppose to be 100% analog,

best,

In case anyone else wanted confirmation: I've now had it confirmed that the trim is all in the analogue domain; and it basically moves the volume for that input up or down the range.

Thanks, this makes sense. It also explains why input trim has no effect on the 272's fixed analog output (which lies before the volume control).
