Time to get the vinyl out of the loft
Posted by: dayjay on 27 May 2016
In a desperate attempt not to buy a 250DR, which I'm not sure I need, I have pulled the trigger on an ex dem Rega RP8 and a Stageline that I definitely don't need. Now I can listen to my old vinyl complete with its crackles and pops and spend more money on albums I already own. All of this and I have saved myself £1,500 on the price of a Nap250DR. Oh God.
eurg ... hope the vinyl wasn't really in the loft ... horrid place to keep it
Its a lovely loft, all cosy and clean, I'm sure the albums love it up there!
Just so long as the temperature never got too hot or too cold...
My loft has written off a whole box of "collectable" US label(s) blues & early rock 78's & 45's from late 1950's thru 1960's. I left my CD's up there over last summer & its not done the cases any good either, I hope the CD's are OK, not tried any to check but not really bothered if NAS & back up remain OK.
Why not have a vinyl system up in the loft. Get cosy with the pops and crackles.
David - my vinyl survived 3 years in the garage. Could probably do with a wet clean though!
you guys are getting me worried -- i have a LOT of vinyl in the loft, plus all my CDs now that they are ripped![]()
i will have a check...
enjoy

No need to worry Ken, you only need to worry when you don't know. Just take a thermometer & place around the area where your CD & record boxes are. Its a sunny day today (in most parts) & it will give you an indication of how hot it gets. Also check how long into the night it stays hot as its not just the temperature, time is an issue as weeks & months at warm temps will slowly warp records.
I left several LP's in the loft. When I brought them down, they were only fit for Pop Art. ![]()
Hm, I will check it out and see what condition it is in. I have other albums in better areas so all is not lost but we will see. In the meantime I've ordered a couple of original pressings on some favourite albums from the past - the last time I had a vinyl system they would have been new!
Vinyl out of the loft, doesn't appear to have come to any harm that a good clean won't resolve. Having fun looking through them now, it's like meeting old friends. Happy days.
I had all my vinyl (200 albums or thereabouts) in the loft untouched for at least 20 years. A couple of months ago I brought it all out and gave it to a friend who has an LP12 and Naim amplifiers. Every week or so he eulogises about how good one album or another sounds, so apart from that some of the covers were stuck together, the vinyl doesn't seem to have suffered at all.
best
David
I left my vinyl in my garage for at least 10 years (albeit in plastic storage boxes), and after buying a new TT and Okki Nokki, I'm glad to say that they haven't come to any harm! There's still some dodgy '80s stuff in there though.

Thinking exactly the same....!
Guys - just get those vinyls out of those lofts and send them over to me. Happy to send a courier over ![]()

How are you getting on with the RP8? That's my next rig I'm saving for. Just got an RP6 using it with a Stageline/Flatcap and it's fantastic. Very quiet, no hum what so ever.

It only arrives on Tuesday, really looking forward to it. I haven't had a turntable for over 25 years so it's a bit of nostalgia really. I'll post how it goes once it arrives
Lightweight support essential imo, David.

I've got a suspended wooden floor so I've bought the Rega wall bracket and the adapters
Don't worry it will make you need the 250dr so get saving!
David - Regas are quite easy to set up. Few points to watch out for:
* Anti-skating - definitely worth getting that blank vinly from your dealer - instructions in the Rega manual are rubbish on that
* Try plugging the power supply into a different circuit. It may help (with my RP6 it did help, with RP10 no difference)
* Apheta 2 cartridge will take a few rounds to settle down - initially it can sound a bit mechanical and 'square sounding'.
Enjoy!
Adam
Thanks Adam, one of the reasons I picked a Rega is that it is a very long time since I set one up and I haven't got a clue

No! It's take me a week to talk myself out of it. I'll wait until Xmas and then borrow my dealers and see if I really do need it

You'll be OK. Just watch that antiskating thing... Everything else is easy with Rega
That's why I like them.

David - you need to form a different 'null hypothesis' for that test - you need to test it to understand why you DON'T needed it. Otherwise if you approach it wih a 'See if I really do need it' attitute, you've already bought it... And then it's not a test.
I've been there myself redently and ended up with an NDS after such a 'failed' test.... My hypothesis was 'Surely it can't be that good for that idiotic amount of money....' I lost the battle shortly thereafter...
