Multiple Libraries with Naim App & Asset?

Posted by: Yetizone on 27 May 2016

Hi folks, Does anyone know if its possible to create separate music libraries for family members with the Naim app - or with Asset?

Ideally I’d like each family member to be able to quickly select their music library without wading through some 600+ albums. All FLAC files are currently stored in a dedicated folder on a Mac Mini, each person having their own sub folder holding their rips.

I know I can view each persons folder if I use the Naim app this way (screenshot): Advanced Search - Folders & File Browsing - Then choose a folder.

Trouble is, initially this shows the the Naim icon tiles only, the album artwork only appears once the album has been selected, rather than the preferred browsing via album artwork as per the screen grab below.

Is there any way of setting this up so that each person can browse their own folder via Album Artist / Album By Artist view with cover artwork visible? Like this...

Any pointers most welcome.

You could always install multiple UPnP servers - one per person?

minimserver does display cover art in artist folders in the folder view. So you see the cover before entering the album folder. Unfortunately the directory view that lists the artist folders does not show covers. (I would like to see the first or maybe the last cover inside the artists folder. You could work around this by placing (maybe sym-linking) a folder.jpg link to an cover image.

Sn alternative could be to use a special tagging. E.g. by using a tag "owner" and configure minimserver to generate generate an owner-tag-list.

That was the first thing I thought of.  Next thought was tagging . . . which Gert covered.

Or just have the artists in a list, and upon selecting the artist the albums would appear with an album artwork thumbnail on the left - the way Squeezebox software controller does it. Naim's approach with the "larger" generic icons seems a little "clunky" to me based on what I see here...and how it coordinates with Asset I do not know.

Not streamless, but with Minimserver if you use something like MP3Tag to add a "Owner" tag; you can then have Owner appear in the Minimserver browse tree and so select... Owner and get a list Yetizone; Mrs Yetizone; Yetizone Child 1; etc. from there you can browse as normal.

With Minimserve you don't actually need to go as far as adding an "Owner" tag though as you can go "[folder view] select the required folder then ">>Tag View" and its back to viewing as normal with album art, etc.

PS. @DrMark: the "generic" icons aren't Naim's, they are provided by Asset (or whatever UPnP server you are running).

Asset sends artwork (an album cover) for each artist folder that is seen when you view the individual artists' folders.  I rather like that feature.  It's not clear to me how it picks which of the album covers to use however.

Could you not use folder view, given that each person has their own folder?

The ">> Tag View" seems to disturb the naim app. This is why I disabled it. See point 2) on  http://forum.minimserver.com/a...php?thread-2966.html

Thanks for replies folks, still new to all of this and finding my feet as it were. One thing for sure, the Unitiqute is a great sounding little unit for the money and I'm playing album / track after track!

Firstly, I think I’d rather stick with Asset at the moment and see if I can get a work around with either the Naim or Asset itself - may post on the dBopowermap forum and see if anyone can help there too.

@ PhilHarris: Interesting idea, although the complexity of managing different manufacturers UPnP servers for five music libraries could be fun! Unless theres a way of creating new Asset accounts, similarly to separate accounts in iTunes, can this be done I wonder?

@ Drmark & Hungry Halibut: It is a little clunky, but even in list view when viewing the Folder & File mode, the album artwork only appears once the album has been selected.

@ HungryHalibut: Yes, that’s what I’m doing, it works, but the album art does not show in that mode until an album is chosen.

I’ll have another play and see if its possible to create album playlists as opposed to track playlists - that would help with the smaller music collections.

You could just use a few more of the free versions of Asset - they do most things and would avoid the learning curve/complexity. I have one paid for version and 2 free versions on other machines.

There's a thread on this on the Asset forum

Thanks Gavin - that's superb! I will read through in detail this evening.
