Sonore Sonicorbiter SE for streaming to DAC V1?

Posted by: charlesphoto on 27 May 2016

So I currently use a UQ v1 to stream via spdif to a V1. Never tried the USB on the V1 so on a whim plugged my Macbook into it using a trial of Audirvana. I found the sound to be just as engaging, if not somewhat more detailed, then the UQ streaming. So got me thinking that I would love to move the UQ from the equation - and to my office! It's a waste doing just the one thing, and will be far superior to what's there now.

So has anyone used one of these Sonicorbiters into an async DAC? For $300 they look like a pretty great solution. Other solution I've considered is a Mac Mini. It's really just for playing album files from my Vortexbox - internet radio etc is mostly handled by the Mu-so in the dining room/kitchen.

Any suggestions? I like the sound from digital out on the UQ, and the Naim app, but more and more I'm thinking it's overkill, esp when the V1 is designed around the USB input.

There is no reason this shouldn't work.  If a linux pc can recognize the V1 the sonicorbiter should.  If you are at all computer savvy you can build this yourself for less than 300.

It is just a Cubox-I with a custom OS.  You could use Runeaudio instead and be real close to this solution.

The microrendu is a customized board solution that people really seem to be liking  at double the price.

Yeah, I heard back from them and of course they said "get the microRendu!" Think for now just going to continue streaming with the UQ and save my pennies (or ask my lovely wife for Xmas?) for the rendu. It does seem the most robust solution. Otherwise, yeah, maybe I'll try building a Cubox, Pi, or NUC and see how it works. Seems like I can do that for around $100.

I'm in the same boat. I use my Qute as a streamer only and I'd love to move it elsewhere. I have mine feeding a Schiit Gumby. I've been looking closely at options. My problem is that I use the actual remote 90% of the time. This reduces the options quickly.

I used to use a Qute 2 to feed my Hugo.  I borrowed a friends Mac Book Pro with Audirvana and bought a Mac Mini the next day.  The standard Mac Mini was even better than the MB Pro.  Since then I have added a USB Regen and a Jitterbug.  This set up, along with the Audirvana remote control on the IPad is more than good enough for me, and I doubt if I will ever move to a streamer.

Yeah, still considering the Mini. One nice thing is I could purchase and and write it off for the office (not so easy with a piece of dedicated hifi gear). Still, the things that are being written about the Sonore products have me really intrigued. One thing to consider is the microRendu uses less than 5w of power, and something like 1.4w in standby. So that's like a (small) led bulb compared to Naim's incandescent.

And the microRendu opens up the world of Roon ( and hqplayer)

I think that you should use the USB input of your V1. You have plenty of alternatives how to do so. Mac mini, Sonic Orbiter, microRendu will all works. You could also consider Aries Mini and the upcoming Bryston Pi. Every low-power computer (Raspbery Pi, fit-PC fitlets, ...) can run MinimServer, MPD and upmpdcli and thus act as a dedicated music server + USB renderer which you can control with BubbleUPnP, Linn Kinsky, Linn Kazoo, the Lumin app or any OpenHome compatible control point.
