System Combination

Posted by: Tham Kok Leong on 30 May 2016

Apparently, I have the following system components,

[1] CD5XS

[2] ND5XS

[3] DACV1

All this system components are connected to NAC202 with HICAPDR+NAPSC and NAP200 on PROAC D20R speaker system.

I wished to get some advice which method will produce best sound quality.

Option (1) CD5XS (digital output) ---> ND5XS  (digital output) ----> DACV1 (Analog output) ---> NAC202 ---> NAP200

Option (2) CD5XS (digital output)  and ND5XS (digital output) ----> DACV1 (Analog output) ---> NAC202 ---> NAP200

Option (3) CD5XS (analog output)  and ND5XS (analog output) ----> NAC202 ---> NAP200

The last option is to omit DACV1 as DAC decoder and use the respective system component internal DAC for digital signal processing.

Please advice. Thanks

KL Tham.

The DAC v1 seems to be redundant in your system. I haven't compared the DAC V1's DAC to the ND5X's so not sure which would be better on the CD5x.

My guess is that it would be best to sell/trade the DAC V1 toward a NAPSC and Hicap for the 202 or a XP5XS for the ND5XS

As you have all the boxes, surely you can try the combinations for yourself. If it was me, I would swap the ND5 and the Dac for an NDX.

Indeed. Alternatively or subsequently go S/H nDAC on ND5, then PSU on nDAC.

Or you could sell the ND5xs, the V1, the 202, the Hicap and the napsc and get a 272.

This sounds like the glaringly obvious option to me.

OP - how come you ended up with all these bits of kit you seem to know nothing about?

+1 providing you are happy streaming and don't need CDs playing

thanks guys for the inputs. It looks like DACV1 is not very helpful in my setup which I might consider of trade/sell it.  Maybe I can consider of replacing :-

[1] Trade in DACV1 with a nDAC

[2] Sell off DACV1 and use ND5XS internal DAC

I didn't suggest selling the CD player though...

Or if box count is not an issue, keep the 202/200 but replace the CD5XS, ND5XS and V1 with an NDX.

My main source of musics are playing from CD and streaming from NAS therefore streamer and CD player still as my main component.

I only confuse whether an add on DACV1 will improve sound quality or not?  With advice given,  I am considering of disconnecting source devices to DACV1 instead go direct to NAC202. (let ND5XS and CD5XS internal DAC to do the processing).

With this, I keep DACV1 for other room setup by adding NAP100 to power my spare KEF LS50 speaker.

+1 for replacing ND5XS, DACV1, NAC202 with 272.

Having the 272 would still allow you to keep your CD as a transport source.

The DACV1 is really redundent. Yes place use it with a NAP100 elsewhere.

Again, you will get better results consolidating the ND5XS and NAC202 with the 272.
