Speaker Decision
Posted by: Sweeney Denis on 30 May 2016
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions of floor standing speakers I could shortlist?
I used to have a UnitiLite and B&W CM8 S2's in a fairly small apartment (4m x 3.5m) but have since moved into a house. I upgraded to the SuperUniti but kept the speakers. The room size is much larger now (8m x 9m) and I find that even though the SU has more power and presence, the sound just doesn't fill the room and sounds quite thin and un-involving. I listen mainly to R&B via Spotify and streaming from a NAS. Would a sub help or would I be better to change speakers? I live in Brisbane where there aren't too many dealers around where I can listen. Happy to spend up to 3000 sterling or around $8000 dollars here. Any suggestions for short listing would be so much appreciated.
Thanks
+1 for TQ Black, and as I happen to be using Aria 926s I can confirm that the cable works very well with them. Great cable for the money
In my opinion, NACA5 is far superior at resolving the Naim strengths. The TQ is a nicer sound but the NACA5 is more energetic. At least, in my experience.
Frank.

Dave,
In that size room, he'd have to be looking at something closer to a Momentum 5i. You'd be pushing things with the SuperUniti but it should cope.
Here in the UK, Shahinan Arcs would be too expensive. However, they may be closer to the $8k mentioned in the US because they're American. They have a big wide expansive presentation which might suit, and they match the SuperUniti well, just not sure about pricing.

Absolutely agreed Frank.
Hi Denis
May I suggest a different approach? I have a Uniti 1, the original, and it sounded lovely. However it lacked a certain "oomph", and it just didn't quite do it for me. I upgraded the unit by adding a NAP200 and I am satisfied with this two-box system. It made a massive difference to my ears and I am pleased with the sound.
I would suggest that something like NAP250DR would be a massive step up for you. The B & W speakers will benefit from much tighter control and grip and it could be that which is the issue.

I was able to hear the Focal 926's once again and this time hooked up to my SU! Even more impressed so have traded in the B&W's for the Focal Aria 926's - expecting them to be delivered by Friday this week, just in time for a weekend marathon of listening. I was going to order the NAC speaker cable but before I do, are there alternatives that would also work well to consider?
The 926's are excellent speakers, I've had them myself for a while, you certainly will not be disappointed. Would definitely suggest the TQ black speaker cables, but if your budget allows try the TQ Ultra blacks, you get more of everything..... but as always try and have a home dem

+1 I have the 926s, spent weeks auditioning every speaker up to around £3k and chose them, and I also have TQ Black speaker cable on them. The speaker cable was a really big upgrade over the Chord Rumour 2 I had before.
Sonus Faber Olympica sound terrific with Naim.... As does their Venere S edition.
Hi once more and thanks for all the useful tips.
As I mentioned, have gone with the Focal 926's. Had them for a week or so now and they are a massive improvement, in my room, over the B&W CM8 S2's. They fill the room with great sound and the bass has so much more extension and slam than the B&W's. Next steps will be to determine which cable to buy but at this stage I'll just stay with what I have as I'm really enjoying my music once again.
Thanks again...

Your right of course, that can be just as much fun...although everytime I upgrade SWMBO gets a new handbag...
I think it's the anticipation of spending money as well - the research that one does to support the spend and there's always new information that's stumbled upon or presented that goes into the final mix. Sad, but I think I like the research almost as much as the end result. :-)
