Tacima power adaptor with UnitiLite

Posted by: Martycol on 03 June 2016

Hi - I will be taking my UnitiLite to a country where power cuts and therefore surges are common and also I suspect the mains quality is poor. As a cheap fix - can't pay a lot, I have seen talk of the Tacima CS947, with is a mains conditioner and surge protector, supposedly, for about £30. Has anyone used one of these and if so opinions please - and also will it affect the quality of sound at all - What Hifi suggests it squeezes treble? Thanks a lot.

Yes it reduces the micro-dynamics in the sound.  However, if there's a lot of HF noise / distortion on the mains AC waveform, then that can cause even worse problems in the sound.

Like most 'surge' protectors, it will protect against most mains voltage 'spikes' (i.e. very short duration), but not against surges (which are much  longer periods of mains over-voltage, and are usually not high enough voltage to be damaging to consumer equipment).  Fortunately spikes are a far more common occurrence than surges that get to a damaging level.

I have one of these and used it in my previous system for a while, and it did affect the sound quality, but I've never tried it with my Naim kit, though I suspect the effect would be similar.  I found it seemed to improve separation and made the high frequencies a little sweeter, I always want to describe the effect as a more 'airy' sound, but all this seemed to be at the expense of drive, energy and musical impact.  I lived with it in place for about 6 months, then decided i didn't like it, something that was confirmed when I reinstated my trusty MK Duraplug.  The Tacima does to give this sense of greater detail and cohesion, but the energy and impact of the music is just lost somehow, it's all too tip-toe-like.  That said, I can well imagine people preferring the Tacima effect, it's all down to individual tastes and priorities, but with my old Cyrus kit anyway, yes, for better or worse, it did affect the sound quality noticeably.  For £30 though, worth a punt if it might help prevent damage to your components, and you may well like the effect, it is at least intended to improve sound quality rather than damage it.

I use the cs929 and as far as I'm concerned it neither adds nor detracts from the Sq of my nait xs/cd5i italic etc.you'd have to be listening very intently and have a great ear to hear any discernable difference imho.

I've just removed 2 cs929 leads from my place. One in the same room as my hifi. The other in another part of the house. Replaced them with normal extension leads. The difference in sound with my CDX2 and SN is immediately noticeable. Cleaner sound, better image and a better 3 dimensional soundstage.

The difference in picture quality now the tv, sky, blu ray etc are now 'unfiltered' in is unchanged.

The 929s wont be staying in the house!
