Wich speakers with an entry level set-up?
Posted by: Michaudg on 04 June 2016
Hi. bonjour,
I am new in this forum and I am revamping everything...
I just upgraded to the following Components : Naim FlatCap xx, Naim NAC 112x et Naim NAP 155 XS (previously from a Crown DC 300 amp, Dayton Wright pre-amp and a pair of IMF TLS 50 geriatric speakers, that is revealing of my age... ).
Therefore and I'm about to purchase either new or preowned Loudspeakers. I'm seeking a word of wisdom from this panel. I'm torned between thoses:
- Harbeth Super HL5
- Acoustic Zen Adagio
- or Neat Acoustic Motive 1.
So, can you enlighten me a little more please?
"Respectfully yours".
Gilles from Montreal.
Hi and welcome to the forum....I'm personally not a fan of Harbeth, others I'm sure will disagree, which is one thing you will find on the forum... lots of differing opinions.....i would definitely audition the neat motive 1, regarding the Acoustic Zen Adagio I can't comment having not ever heard them....would also suggest focal have an excellent range, as always best thing to do is have a short list and home audition and make your decision based on your own listening experience...

Thank you so much.
You must update on how you get on.....
As you are in Montreal, I suggest you also check out Totem Acoustic.
Frank.
Entry level for the Revel range, would also be useful to explore....
As Frank says, Totem are worth an audition. Their entry level Dreamcatcher is particularly entertaining but you must audition at home, particularly speakers can sound very different in a dealers dem room.
A music buddy of mine uses Russell K Red 50 stand mount speakers on Something Solid stands with his 112/115 system and they simply sound fantastic

Yep, Russell K 50 would be on my shopping list without a doubt. The 100 is even better, looks aside….
Hi Gilles,
Your ''geriatric'' TLS 50's as you say were some of the best loudspeakers of it's time and they could be difficult to replace today with modern looking speakers without spending a lot. As you are accustomed to the fine quality of bass from your IMF's, you could have the crossovers rebuilded for a reasonable price or try to demo some PMC speakers that are also transmission lines.

I heard the K100s with a V1/NAP100 any was very impressed too. You can, at extra cost, get them in a traditional wood veneer if the styling isn't to your taste. I certainly couldn't live with the cheaper red and grey finish.
Seek out Elac speakers, try to audition. They will surprise you, and will compete with those speakers you mention, and save you a lot of money also.

Yes they look much better in the extra cost wood finish. I couldn't live with the toy town red and grey either. Bloody good speaker though… i heard them with a 272/XPSDR/250DR and they relished the juice.
Heard some Russel K's at the Bristol show recently , met the designer, although I didn't realise it at the time, but speakers definitely worth a demo ..
Songs Faber chameleon range (very good with Naim)
Dynaudio Emit range or Excite range (X14 in particular, and X34)
ProAC studio range (amazing)
I doubt he'll be able to audition Russell Ks in the Montreal area. A pair of Proac Studio 118s would be a pretty safe bet.
I'd give the U.S. distributor for Russell K a call - they may know where one can audition the Red Series loudspeakers nearby to the Montreal area. They're well worth a listen, and the designer knows his stuff.
Bonjour Gilles,
Have a listen to some of the Davis Acoustics speakers. They're a well-established French company who build their own drivers and also supply some well-known speaker companies. I bought their compact Olympia Master One, because the speaker's midrange is simply one of the best I've heard in years, with bass that reaches down easily to 40 Hz and that never intrudes on the midrange. Voices are uncanny.
Audio d'Occasion carries them and are also the distributor.
You've not mentioned the size of your listening room, but Davis has a full range of speakers, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one that matches your room.

I think You are absolutely right. I will try to listen to the PMC's. Thanks for your time and generosity.
