Can anyone identify these speakers?
Posted by: GeeJay on 05 June 2016
Going through some old photos today (please pardon the quality - these are scans of very old prints), and came across some photos of my first HiFi in 1981. I remember the turntable was a Sansui SR-222 Mk II, the amplifier a JVC JA-S11 (with matching JVC JT-V11G tuner), and the cassette deck being a Hitachi D-75S (a replacement for my earlier JVC CD-1740 cassette deck);

I cannot remember the make and model of speakers though, and hope that some sharp-eyed forum member can identify them (especially with the unique (?) triple port);

The speakers sounded great with this system at the time (they were upgrades of some home-built HeathKit ones that I had earlier). Yes, it's funny to see what posters I was sticking on my wall as a youngster - Fiat 127 Sport? (Seriously?).
Also, the home-made speaker stands covered with orange Fablon were all I could afford at the time!
Anyway, any help with identifying the speakers (and filling the gap in my memory) much appreciated. Many thanks!

Don't recognise the speakers, but love the HD414 Sennheisers!!
Yes, 414s! Spent many evenings as a student with those yellow songes clamped to my head.
Still have them in the loft somewhere, but which loft...
Don't recognise the speakers I'm afraid. Weren't Mission fond of multiple ports?

Don't knock the 127
I had the 1300GT Sport once as well ! Loved it ! Especially after it had free-flow exhaust, different cams and uprated fueling. Just don't mention rust...
And those Sennheisers - Remember my parents having these until I "borrowed" them and never gave them back ![]()
(But can't say what speakers they are...sorry...

Blow me down if that ain't a JA-S11G! Still got the HD414s. (New foams easily available).
Mission or Monitor Audio is my guess...

JVC JA S11, I had one of those, at the time I loved it....had some Rotel speakers on the end...
JPW's ?
The only time I've seen those tweeters was on a Paisley Research pair but I have never seen them with dual or triple ports.

I'm no expert on JPWs, however googling them comes up with pictures of the speakers similar to mine, but without the triple port - also my speakers have no manufacturers badge visible with the grill removed ;

I also don't remember them being Mission or Monitor Audio (but then I have a lousy memory, so not sure how much I can rely on that!).
The search continues......

My first car was a Mini Metro that I had from new - the front wings rusted through in 3months, and I had an argument with British Leyland to have them replaced under warranty! So, not just Fiats and Lancias! Still, I never had a Metro poster on my wall as a youngster!

Great amp - My JA-S11 was the non 'G' (older model), but the tuner was a 'G'. All hooked up with QED 79 strand speaker cable!

I loved the 414s - so comfortable, light and a great sound! Reformed them 3 or 4 times and ended up passing them on to a friend. Kind of made me loyal to Sennheiser, and recently bought some HD-800S - sound great, especially when hooked up to my Chord Mojo DAC!

Thanks for having a look Tony. Yes, these are weird/unique looking, and it's really frustrating not being able to tell what they are - I should have written it down when I had them! My bad.....

The first thing I thought when I saw the photo, was the tweeter doesn't doesn't belong on that cabinet.
The tweeter surround looks deformed around the four mounting screws, something you wouldn't expect to happen, unless it isn't original.
I think they are a celef model but with extra ports possibly added at a later date. Also Looks like a Kef B200 bass unit.

Everything is original on the speaker - no mods and I had them from new - the deformation may have been due to ignorance in my younger days of thinking that a well (over!) tightened speaker led to better sound - oh foolish youth! Many of the suggestions so far have been speakers with only three screws holding a circular tweeter - this seems unusual in having four (like the Celef ones that Dingdong mentions).
Thanks for continued suggestions.

I'm sorry I can't help with the OP speakers - there is a blog out there called seventies stereos - maybe the author there could help? They're not production Mission speakers, that's for sure.
The tweeter in the OP is from SEAS and was used in the Mission 770 and 727 speakers - the 770 being the speaker that put Mission on the map. It is used in pre-770 Missions too, such as the 710 and earlier 727. Currently you'll see it crop up in other Mission speakers that have been "restored" or repaired too.
Here are some examples:

BTW, loving the VU meters built into the shelf!
So that's a no then?
Typical forum thread OP asks about speakers and the discussion is on cars.Love it. ![]()
Eh?

Thanks for this Sunbeam - yes, I can see that the tweeter does look like the SEAS ones you've identified. Another step nearer to identification!
Although it may not be helpful, I bought the speakers from a HiFi shop that used to be in Widmore Road, Bromley (Kent) in the late 1970s. Number 32 (or thereabouts) - looks like it's a copier shop or a nail salon now!
if any dealers are reading this, maybe they remember selling them back then?
Anyway, my thanks to you all for your continued thoughts and input - I'm sure that between us, we'll get to the answer!

I used to have a set of the Mission 770s, used them for years after making the mistake of getting rid of my Heybrook HB1s, my brother still has them and they still work perfectly so they are fairly robust tweeters!

Agree - they seemed to have withstood my zealous over-tightening!

Yes, I bought these from a small electronics shop that sold stuff like this in Tottenham Court Road (back in the day when these shops existed for the electronics hobbyists). Not sure it did much for the SQ though, being connected to the tape out phono sockets on my amp! I did like the visuals though, and also built my own sound to light unit for the occasional discos that I used to run at Uni.

I also had (and still have) 414s. Mine have one white and one black "driver" from an 80's vintage repair - don't recall why it went that way. Recently bought new foams for them as well. (As in the last 5 years or so.)
I remember when I got them I tried to use them at the college radio station, albeit unsuccessfully, because they fed back through the microphone.
wow,great to see those lovely mission 710s.started with "libertyphone" 100s ( an in-house store brand) then small advents and then mission 710s
Pioneers? Certainly available on the Tottenham Court Road in the late 70's

Not Pioneers. Also, speakers bought in Bromley, not Tottenham Court Road.......

I contacted Lloyd (from that website - based in US). His response was "It is a Seas tweeter, looks like it could be a KEF woofer.
Mission did make a 3 ported speaker later. Honestly, I have no idea, but I’ll send the photo to someone who might. Cheers, Lloyd".
