Computer-Fi
Posted by: Will Dias on 11 June 2016
Just overhauled the 2nd system in our dining room (which doubles as a stuy in our terraced house). The computer's in the bay window, at the end of a refectory table. We listen to/watch music while we eat. It was a (still quite impressive to the average punter) Rega Brio/Heybrook Helios combo, now upgraded to Nait 2/Linn Katan. It just sounds wonderful. The Katans are so close in character to Kans (which I've always loved, but ths system has no wall behind), and the Nait 2 is everything I've read - probably (£ for £) THE best naim amp ever.
Most of my friends don't even have this level of stuff on their main system, and they think I'm mad to have the main system I have). What d others have to accompany their computer?
Regards,
Will.
BTW, can anybody see the pic? I followed instructions. FFS I'm a software engineer, please don't say that I can't upload pics to a blummin' formum!
Is there a trick?
Yes there's a trick: Don't use forums based on Hoop-La!
Ha ha. I've tried >2 souces for the url, and it won't show. I have developed complex software for the aerospace industry and I can't post a blinkin' image, feeling 'humbled'
You need to direct URL to the image. Click on insert/edit image which brings up the dialog box. Paste in the URL in the box marked "Source". Press OK. It should show up in your reply. Then publish your post.
I'm not in IT...
Will, join the club. I've developed scientific instrumentation software for the international research and petrochemical markets and been a systems designer for a clearing bank, and I can't always post images here either! I believe it is possible from Photobucket (and maybe some others), but I don't use that.
Hi Richard, that's what I tried from Google+, that doesn't always work - currently it doesn't work from some URI domains, but seems to be OK from others.

Hi Richard, I'm not in IT either, I'm an engineer ;-). I've tried exactly what you have suggested from 2 different sources. I'll create an account with p-bucket & see if that works.
My word, photobucket is awful. Still, managed to upload a pic without being annihilated by too many pop-ups/ads. Lets try this:
I don't think that's worked. I'm going to retire and become a dry-stone waller.
<irony> at least I have some fantastic music playing while I struggle with this piggin' awful software, although I can't show it to you </irony>
Richard, I can view the source for these pages, and use the embedded link to my pictures, which works. Your forum is somehow failing to 'make' the link and display the image. I now develop web based software for the education sector, I'd be a bit embarrased if i produced something that was so bad to use as this, I'm afraid to say.
I've got a step by step guide for Photobucket in Word or PDF format. If anyone wants a copy then feel free to email me (email address is in my profile).
Richard, I can send a copy to you if you'd like to add it to the FAQ page.
Voila (using Photobucket);

ATB. George.
If the direct URL is clean, it should be fine. Usually issues only crop up if the site is not so clean or there's something within the URL address or description that triggers the filters.
Graham, if you want you can post on this thread and I can then place it within the FAQ.
Sweet. What's that monitor stand? I currently have mine on an apple crate, but I like the storage under this one.
George - you're a genius (& I'm obviously an idiot?). Many thanks.
Charles - the monitors are just sitting on a couple of Ikea Bamboo placemats, bought to match the bamboo 'SamDi' monitor stand. Nothing special.
I can't believe how great this wee system sounds (near feild, of course). One happy badger.

I might have missed it but how do you get music from the pc to the Nait 2? Soundcard out to a DAC?
Nowt as sophisticated as that, I use a 3.5mm jack to din lead.
Once you have mastered posting photos around here, you might benefit from a USB DAC from your computer to the Nait. I have a friend with a comparable Nait and this setup below sounds great at his house!
We use a computer-powered Meridian Explorer which uses a provided USB to mini-USB in and for an output, takes the self same Mini-to-DIN you have into the Nait; the new Explorer will allow Meridian's new MQA audio standard. This Meridian Explorer unit is a great value, and I feel certain you can find one for a 30 day trial, though you could spend much more or less on a computer based DAC, from Chord, Naim or many others.
Once you get the DAC, I recommend you download Audirvana Plus and try some hi-res music. You won't believe how much better your little set-up can sound at a very small incremental investment!
You might try downloading something from these folks:
Here are some Naim test files that can be downloaded:
http://www.naimlabel.com/musicstore-test-files.aspx
There’s a pretty unusual and amazing hi-res album available free here that I really like (Thanks to Peter S @ Venice Audio):
http://www.nilsfrahm.com/works/sol/
The hi-res files won't work with iTunes so you really must have the DAC that enables the usage of hi-res music.
Will,
As a total aside, I'm loving reading this topic and feeling somehow perversely vindicated by it in that I am a biologist and found posting from Photobucket very logical. I work in a company that has a biological-side and an engineering-side. We often take disparate approaches to problem solving; engineers how things should theoretically work and biologists how things present themselves in a highly variable system that often lacks explanation.
Irrelevant I realize, just felt compelled to share my thoughts. Hope you get your photo posting resolved.
Skip, thanks for the suggestion. It's something I'll definitely consider as a future upgrade.
Joe, thanks for the aside - intriguing; doubly so as my first degree was in ecology, followed by 3 years in ecological research (a long time ago). The head of our department (a lovely man, and brilliant briologist) refused to have a terminal in his office, as he couldn't use it, despite many attempts at training.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the instructions. That's EXACTLY what I did - nada.
I'll try another one. Apologies to those bored by this now (as am I)

Bingo. Exactly the same procedure, and this time it worked. Randomness abounds!
Will, does the Nait fit under the SamDi without the bamboo bases?
FYI, I recently sold my amp and am now listening to my SL-2s driven by my Nait2 and it's ridiculously good for what it is.
Frank.
Hi Frank,
the monitor stand is about 5-10mm too low, and so i had to get the bases, however, if i remember correctly, there may be a taller model. It's a lovely design.
I'm so pleased i got the Nait. It's an astounding amp.
regards, will
