Sarah Jarosz

I have the delightful 'Build Me Up from Bones' and her new album 'Undercurrent' is released on 17th June. If you don't know her music, there is a very nice taster of three (old) songs on The Toob. Type in her name and 'Tiny Desk'.

The Tiny Desk Concerts are generally very good.

John, great recommendation, I picked up 'Build Me Up From Bones' a beautiful album. Love her take on Bob Dylan's Simple Twist of Fate.

Gave her a try . . . my wife yells in from the other room, "What's that crap you're listening to??"  Ha.

Obviously she has a great voice, but it's a genre that we just don't have an ear for here.

I would posit Mrs Bart's taste is mostly in her mouth...and Jarosz is much more than a "great voice."

She is a virtuoso mandolin player, and also plays octave mandolin, guitar and clawhammer banjo. She mostly writes her own stuff (and has since her teen years), has formal music education from the New England Conservatory of Music (where she graduated with honors) and even as a teen was being called up on stage to jam on mandolin with the likes of Ricky Skaggs. She signed her first recording contract at 16, and released her first album at 17. Has received much critical acclaim. Quite a prodigy for someone who is only 25.

Her stuff may not be everyone's cup of tea, but even if it's not, it is a far cry from and should be recognized as not being "crap".

Thanks for the heads-up, that reminds me to listen to a bit more of her music. I bought Live at the Troubadour last year (it was her cover of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Kathy's Song' that first attracted my attention.)

The more you listen, the more impressive she is.
