Powerline upgrade. (272 & 250DR)

Posted by: Steve GTX on 13 June 2016

I've had some really good advice regarding upgrades, after posting a question on this forum and I'm now following (some of) the advice from Hungryhalibut.

I have ordered a new rack and have just taken delivery of an ex demo Powerline cable (while I save up for an XPS).

Where should I get the best results -the 272 or 250DR?

As you have the kit there, i'd let your ears decide.

+1 to what Gary said, but the often-quoted guide is "source first" so you might try it on the 272 first......

Thank you guys, I would have tried both anyway but it's always interesting to hear other opinions.

By the way David, if a cat sat on my speakers....I'd shoot it!

Just get two and the problem goes away.

Or even better, get an XPS and put your 2nd powerline (the one HH advised you to buy ) there.

But on a serious note - I would first try it on the power amp. Ultimately - let you ears decide.

GTX

It would be interesting and useful to update this post with your findings for the record.

I think it's easier to assess the benefit of upgrades by living with them for a while, then removing them, to see if you miss them. Getting two Powerlines, and removing each one in turn after maybe a week, would be my approach, so HHs suggestion makes sense. If you do get an XPS, of course, the second Powerline would then go on that instead of the 272, the chances are once you've bought two, you'll just end up keeping them.

Have to agree with HH. Just get, or at least plan to get, two PL's and hey presto, problem solved. You can usually try before you buy, but you will keep them.

I personally see little point in getting one Powerline and then wondering where to put it. Source, amp, power supply? The difference is rather subtle, and In the end you will get one for each of the components anyway... I started with one, couldn't decide where to put it, got another one, and another one a couple of months later. Sell the house, the car, do what you like, but get those powerlines you really crave for...

There is a huge glacier region in north Canada that moves faster when one Powerline is connected to the source !!!

Source first.

Thank you guys.

The long term objective is to get two and then the XPS but that will take a little time!

I took advantage of a deal on this demo Powerline and thought that I'd use it now.

Will report back when I've tried it out

Despite what I said above, if the Powerline purchases are delaying the purchase of an XPS, I would leave them for now.

The best thing to do is set your capital de minimis just above the price of the Powerline. That makes the Powerline a revenue item which should therefore not impact on the timeframe for capital investment in the XPS, as they come from different budgets.

That must be THE best explanation / justification I have read in ages! Love it

I'm still trying to get my head round that one.

Essentially - EUR 500 (or whatever the price of a Power Line is) should be set as a level which is unnoticible in your budget. Therefore purchasing something like a Power Line, which is few Euros / Pounds below that treshold will not even register on one's expense radar and will not require a pre-approval from a domestic CFO

OK OK OK - I get the point!

Consequently, I've just had a really good demo of the XPS and the bottom line is...............I've ordered one

So, now I don't have to worry about where to 'shove' the powerline (you all agree on that) but it does mean that the fast cars, loose women, gambling joints and over priced boozers will just have to wait.

I'll report back when it's all set up and running.

Steve,

Well done!

I also like your order of priorities: Naim, fast cars....

Seems strange when you demo a XPSdr on a 272 or NDX how the credit card suddenly seems to be in the dealers card reader, don't worry it happens to a lot of people including me.

There is a solution to that - set the transaction limit on the credit card just below the price of a cheapest Naim component

That will be the cost of a powerline then. Am I getting it now?

Almost there... In this case you'd nee to set the limit just above the price of the Power Line.
