Football season 2016/17

Given that the fixtures are now out, I thought it would be appropriate to start a new thread.
Hard to believe.
Lets hope the FA wearn't swayed by the pontifications of the so called match of the day experts.
So, in future EVERY player sent off for a two feet off the ground lunge, will expect the FA to overturn the refs decision.
It was overturned because it wasn't a red card....im not even sure it was even a yellow, thanks to mike dean it killed what looked like turning into a good game of football, mind you probably the best west ham have played this season (apart fron mr payet who just doesn't look interested)
He should have got a red AND a yellow.
Red for the feet off the flooor lunge and yellow for the late tackle. Although to be fair I don't think the ref saw the late tackle, he was searching in his pocket for red when the tackle eventually came in.
You must have been watch a different game me, it was 50/50 challenge and if anything it was jones who feet were off the ground...and as for acting afterwards all i could think was ...it must be the oscars next month
Kevin-W posted:MDS posted:MDS posted:MDS posted:I thought it was a typical Mourinho team's performance at the London Stadium, looking to stifle the game and frustrate the opposition having gone one up. I agree Dean's performance was poor. That said I could see why he gave the red card. While Jones' theatrical reaction probably contributed to the decision, the tackle was rash - both feet off the ground and looking like he jumped in. Dean was only a few yards away from the incident. While WHU might appeal the red card I strongly suspect such a appeal would fail.
BBC website now saying that WHU have indeed appealed Feghouli's red card.
....and as predicted, the appeal has been rejected and a 4-game ban imposed. Don't know clubs bother when the TV replays show ample evidence to allow a panel to uphold a referee's decision (which they will be pre-disposed to do).
That's odd, because it [Ferghouli's red card] has been rescinded. Perhaps you were thinking of Man City's Fernandinho, whose appeal has failed. He is now banned for four games. I do hope all of this wasn't wishful thinking on your part...
Doh! I got that completely wrong, Kevin. I was indeed thinking of the player whose name begins with F would plays for Man C. Must pay proper attention next time.

It is rather amusing that Ferghouli is a saint in waiting but Rojo was the devil incarnate.
I would however be grateful if someone could point out to me exactly where in the Laws of football it provides that any two footed challenge is a sending off offence - I've looked but cannot find it so far and I want to understand the actual criteria that should be applied.
I was at the game and was staggered by the sending off. It did spoil the game as it put West Ham on the back foot and probably reduced the margin of victory

From the above link.
Serious foul play
A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality
against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play.
A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as
serious foul play.
Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the
front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force
and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
Advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play unless
there is a clear subsequent opportunity to score a goal. The referee must send
off the player guilty of serious foul play when the ball is next out of play.
A player who is guilty of serious foul play should be sent off and play is
restarted with a direct free kick from the position where the offence occurred
(see Law 13 – Position of free kick) or a penalty kick (if the offence occurred
inside the offender’s penalty area)
I used to live next door to a premiership linesman, he told me once, most of the premiership managers and players don't know the rules of the game, or at least how they're interpreted.
He used to tell me some tales, but unfortunatley I can't realy repeat them.
Im might be bias but i really was shocked by the decision anyway moving on....good result for the spuds tonight, moving up to third, dele alli has got some engine on him
Liked last night's result.
Shows we are real contenders.

The newspaper I read favourably compared Dele Alli with 'the great midfield drifter of old, Martin Peters'.

Chelsea players fluffed their lines last night. They all showed up but en masse couldn't cut it against Spurs in the game. Couple of decent chances missed, our midfield got knocked about and Luiz was back to his old careless self. And then they forget to mark the chap scoring all the goals at the moment...Twice. Hopefully games vs Leicester and Hull will allow us to go marching on once more.

If Kane wakes up and rest of Spurs keep up the quality of play then Spurs may have a chance of doing 'history' this season. Spurs purchases of new players on occasions have been questionable, but Victor Wanyama was defnitely a very positive purchase!

Or "ten years after" as my late father used to refer to Martin P.

Thank you - and as I read the detail the key criteria are excessive force and endangering safety
Saints one up against Liverpool in the home leg of their League Cup semi-final. But with 30mins to go, Coutinho has just been sent on....

Graham Taylor. Absolutely miserable at his passing. Did an amazing job at Watford (twice!) and most Villa fans will tell you with no exaggeration that he saved the club in 1987 (we were in a dreadful state) and took us to touching distance of the League.
Every story (and they're legion) of personal contact with the man is one of compassion and caring.
Thank you Graham, thank you.

It does seem so - terribly sad news
Spurs 4 - Baggies 0
That's way, uh huh, I like it...

Another great result at fortress Turf Moor. The Saints probably shaded the game but we need to points more than most. The fight to stay up continues. Perhaps we will start playing football soon.
Just back from Turf Moor. I almost don't mind Saints losing. What I object to is the manner of their losing. Puel is serving up utter tosh, week in , week out.

I only saw the high lights on tv. Looked like the Saints had more chances and played more football. It's not too hard against my lot as they are still playing Championship football. If we can survive this season, we may be able to make some decent purchases and recruit over the summer. It is still a big "IF" though.
Bodger, I think you will stay up. Forgive me if I say, driving home yesterday we had a discussion about 'what have Burnley done with the TV money?' I mean it's not been spent on the ground or the squad :-)
Would love to know what Kevin makes of Payet's withdrawal of labour.

Me too. Meanwhile I'll offer my view. I think this is a classic case of an over-inflated ego. He had great Euros for France and last season for the Hammers. That's gone to his head. He hasn't put the effort in this season and it shows. He seems to think he's bigger than the club. Payet isn't a youngster with the prospects of further development ahead of him so I'd be surprised to see another club pay mega-bucks for him (though maybe someone in the Chinese league will). I was delighted to see Bilic act by dropping him and making him train with the kids. I was also pleased to see WHU win so convincingly without him yesterday. Serves the moody git right if he languishes in the reserves for the rest of the season.
There. Glad I got that off my chest.
I find many similarities there, Mike, with Southampton's Jose Fonte!
Best, Chris
Listening to the radio when these fixtures came out, it was interesting that all the pundits were blithely carrying on as if the old order (Man U, City, Arsenal, Chelsea) had not been disrupted.
All the "important" matches were these four plus Liverpool. No mention of the likes of Spurs, Leicester or WHU.
I suspect the newspapers will be the same.
But is the old order still tenable? There is no proof that Guardioloa or Conte will adapt to thePL, or that Maureen is the right choice for the Mancs.
Everyone has much more money, and, because of Leicester's achievement last year, nobody is scared of the so-called big boys, all the "little" teams no longer "know their place".
It'll be the most exciting, open season ever and the "big boys" and their media supplicants won't have it all their own way. So, at the risk of making ourselves look stupid, anyone got any predictions?
