Football season 2016/17

Given that the fixtures are now out, I thought it would be appropriate to start a new thread.
Well a curious outcome in today's early game. Apparently Man City enjoyed 71% of possession yet Guardiola suffers his biggest ever defeat. On current form it is hard to see City closing a 10 point gap to Chelsea.
Me too. Meanwhile I'll offer my view. I think this is a classic case of an over-inflated ego. He had great Euros for France and last season for the Hammers. That's gone to his head. He hasn't put the effort in this season and it shows. He seems to think he's bigger than the club. Payet isn't a youngster with the prospects of further development ahead of him so I'd be surprised to see another club pay mega-bucks for him (though maybe someone in the Chinese league will). I was delighted to see Bilic act by dropping him and making him train with the kids. I was also pleased to see WHU win so convincingly without him yesterday. Serves ty forhe moody git right if he languishes in the reserves for the rest of the season.
There. Glad I got that off my chest.
Totally agree wiith your sentiments.... my head says we should cash in and get players in who want to play for the club, my heart says let him rot in the reserves,

Would love to know what Kevin makes of Payet's withdrawal of labour.

I think behind the scenes is the short answer. If I recall they had to buy back the ground. Then ploughed a lot into the training complex, or maybe it was this was re-purchased. Shoe-string budget for many years but funded by the board as with most clubs. Now they are well into the black and more profitable than Bayern Munich. All of which counts for nowt if we go back down. Last year we were again favourites to be relegated. We won the league instead. I think most fans would like to see more spent on players though and see better football. Last time in the PL we spent nothing and the results were as expected. One season only but bounced back.
People my age recall first division footy on the Turf and plenty of internationals in the team. The model then was finding and nuturing talent. Alas, even then, before the Sky money, we had to sell eventually. The club is safe now but surely it is time to kick on.

Thank you for your insight, Dave.

Dave - I think the club using the premier league (TV) money to build the infrastructure of the club and putting in on a sound financial footing is the best thing to do in the longer term. Doing so will ensure there's a healthy football club for many generations to come, preserving the 100+ years of club history. As a Pompey fan I know only too well the risks of over-committing financially in trying to compete with the bigger clubs in the PL. We nearly went under.
In any event, Burnley's home form looks easily good enough to ensure a comfortable season. Enjoy it!

Who's Payet?
A nice three-nil win in a tough London derby. Given the events of the previous week, the lads could have collapsed but they didn't - and fans got to see two exquisite goals. Perhaps Payet was holding us back. Well rid i say. let him rot in the reserves or in China.
Good to see West Ham pick up.There seems to be more stability now.
Shocked when I found out the Everton - Man City result. Not the fact we lost, but by 4.
Watched Spurs - West Brom and Spurs looked very good.Could have been 8-0
Another good win, this time on the road. Two more goals for Big Andy, plus one for - of all people - Callieri. Up to 10th now. It's tempting to think that Payet might have been the source of many of our troubles this season...
Given Swansea's stunning and unexpected win at Anfield, the nerves must be jangling at Selhurst now. Hope the Eagles pull it together soon.

I've wondered the same about Jose Fonte at Saints. Oh wait, he's yours now..

Well pleased with Man City's performance with Spurs.Great game well happy with the draw could have won but Spurs didn't give up.Good to see us recover after the Everton disaster.
Gutted for Middlesbrough with the Hammers ( sorry Kev ).
Good recovery from West Ham.Andy Carroll has been brilliant let's hope he doesn't pick up any injuries.
After the confident performance by Leicester in the corresponding fixture at St Mary's last season, they were unbelievably poor against Southampton today. Saints manager Claude Puel must be a happy man tonight. And rather relieved.

Eight points clear...
Despite the nice gesture by the mayor, Fat Frank is not a household name in America. Not even close.
Wember-leee, Wemb-err-lee.

Well done Southampton all the best in the final
Watching the second leg on Sky, I thought the Saints thoroughly deserved their victory and looking liked scoring right from the start. I suspect they were encouraged by Liverpool's dodgy defence which conceded three at home last weekend.
FA Cup footy on today. In times past, I have feared a cup run by the Clarets. This time out I think it will help struggle to stay in the Prem. Tasty draw on Monday and we might get some momentum. The extra revenue will help as well. When you are paupers in the Championship and the church mouse of the Prem, you need all the help you can get. Burnley at Wembley again. Sounds good to me. I think the last time was the play off's in 2005. Before that the Sherpa Van Trophy vs Wolves. Crickey, that was a while ago. Circa 1988 I think.
Good win for Spurs today as well. Got to catch the highlights of that game.
Dave
Troubled by Saints' directorial incompetence in failing to acquire a serious centre back in the window, to replace either the injured Virgil van Dijk or the sold Jose Fonte.
Still, having expensively bought striker Manolo Gabbiadini, maybe Saints will now win their remaining games in the Prem, 5-4 :-)

Well happy for City running riot again at the Hammers .Thought we had a good chance of winning but not so infactically. The 2-2 draw with Spurs when we looked full of confidence and hunger after the 4-0 disaster away to Everton has continued.
Good to see a mixture of goals.K.D.B, Silva and new signing Gabriel Jesus and Ya Ya Toures 2 nd half penalty.3-0 down at half time and with City's possession it was going to be some comeback from the Hammers.
Well pleased that Pep dropped goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and got Willy Caballero back.loving the midfield with KDB and Silva.Ya Ya as a holding midfielder suits him well.
Tricky game for West Ham away to Southampton Saturday. Think we will put Swansea to bed Sunday.Cant see Chelsea derailing.Liverpool where lucky to get the draw.
Kev
liking the new avatar good to see more of the Frapp. Was watching a 15 min concert film.live in Cologne 2014 on YouTube last weekend.Brilliant enjoyed it..... incredible voice.11.50 pm here.......Time for some Depeche Mode.Policy of Truth to get things started.BTW any progress with your HB 1 refurbishment at Wilmslow ?
Think you will get a sort of DR' d Wilmslow version back in Naim speak....Ha ha .No they should sound wicked mate.Loved my HB 1 s back in the day.My first speaker buy with matching Heybrook stands and a Nait but this combination only lasted 9 months as Kans and a 42-110 made me progress up the upgrade ladder but I kind of missed the HB 1 s high sensitivity easy to listen to quility.A fine British speaker from a flat earth vintage !
Wishing you a good week......Come on City and the Hammers !!
Hi Ian, was there on Wednesday. We were desperately poor and City were very, very good. We were totally outclassed, and our defence was woeful - City practically walked two of their goals in.
I will be happy if we get a draw at Saints away.
Not had time to sort out the HB1s, am a bit skint - just had to pay a huge tax bill and I've started up a record/music company, which is a massive drain on time and funds. I spoke to Wilmslow, and will probably get the HB1s done in April, when I have to go abroad for a couple of weeks.
Really looking forward to the Frapp gigs and album in March...
I take it this was the concert footage you were watching?
PS - Policy of truth (along with World in My Eyes) is my favourite Mode track. Might play Violater... later.

Bet your chuffed with the Hammers.Andy Carroll is looking great.
Surprised with the Liverpool result.A disaster.Chelsea jugganaut rolls onwards and upwards.Looking foward to City tomorrow.Could be Jesus and Agrero in a 4-4-2 .
BTW where the City away supporters noisy on Wednesday night ?
Agree with your comments with regard to Depeche Mode.Just love the fact that every song is unique and the intelligence in the lyrics.Alison Goldfrapp guesting Iive or a studio track would be something.....
Wishing you a Rockin' weekend.
Cheers Ian
Listening to the radio when these fixtures came out, it was interesting that all the pundits were blithely carrying on as if the old order (Man U, City, Arsenal, Chelsea) had not been disrupted.
All the "important" matches were these four plus Liverpool. No mention of the likes of Spurs, Leicester or WHU.
I suspect the newspapers will be the same.
But is the old order still tenable? There is no proof that Guardioloa or Conte will adapt to thePL, or that Maureen is the right choice for the Mancs.
Everyone has much more money, and, because of Leicester's achievement last year, nobody is scared of the so-called big boys, all the "little" teams no longer "know their place".
It'll be the most exciting, open season ever and the "big boys" and their media supplicants won't have it all their own way. So, at the risk of making ourselves look stupid, anyone got any predictions?
