NDX DAC glitches/dropouts?

Posted by: eagle3333 on 15 June 2016

I'm trialling a Mirus dac fed by my NDX/NAS. Dac signal by RCA to din on 252. I keep getting momentary 'drop-outs'. Mostly at the beginning of launching a track; sometimes out of nowhere. Switching NDX digital output from native to 96/24 seemed to solve, but I don't want to do this owing to possible quality loss in up/down-sampling. A previous dalliance with a Hugo did not show up this problem. Can anyone shed any light? SPDIF reclocker between NDX and Mirus has been mooted.. Thanks folks.

Which firmware are you running on your NDX? 4.4 is the latest version...

Eagle, are you saying that when you had an NDX outputting digitally into a Chord Hugo all was well, but now you have changed to a Mirus DAC, there's a problem?  It is a bit curious that you should have decided that the NDX is to blame here - From what you have described, and bearing in mind the only change, one might infer that there is possibly something amiss downstream of the NDX, with the finger of suspicion quite reasonably pointing towards the DAC or interface between the NDX and DAC.

For all that, a bit more info would be helpful.  What FW are you running on the NDX - have you also changed this since the Hugo?  Out of interest, How are you connecting between the two?  Is it the same?  If optical TOSLINK, note that 24 bit 192kHz is not officially supported  and many can't connect reliably this way with either no sound or drop outs.

Thanks Adam - I'll go check that. How does one keep abreast of firmware updates?

Thanks for the reply Richard. There should have been a '/' between NDX and DAC in the thread title. Feel free to amend. I'm not blaming the NDX and, yes, the obvious conclusion re: Hugo is not lost on me. However, I didn't have the Hugo in for long at all - an hour or so. Also, I read of this exact same issue elsewhere; it might have been here. Between NDX and Mirus and recall the OP reporting Mirus were looking into it and had mentioned it not effectively managing jitter from NDX. Perhaps they would! Also curious that on 'Native' from NDX I've not been able to replicate the problem. I'm not pointing any fingers - just looking for a solution! NDX to DAC is BNC.

I would also add that the sound difference between the two is not a case of better than, but different to - so don't think I'm denigrating NDX SQ either. Latter is incredibly precise in its detailing and a thrilling ride; but, for me, a little too incisive at times. An XPS DR tester lent a little extra weight. The Mirus sound is a warmer presentation altogether. At a wallopingly hefty price. It's a funny thing, but after the Mirus 'wall of sound' it was sometimes almost a relief to come back to the slightly more contained NDX. The trial goes on.

By visting Naim's website and this forum. There is usually an annoucment in the Streaming section when a new firmware is released.

I'm not aware of an automated push option for the firmware.
