System Evolution (How did your Naim system evolve)?

Posted by: Bob the Builder on 15 June 2016

I was explaining to a friend last night how my system had evolved and then after reading today how another forum member Gary Yeowell ( hope you don't mind me mentioning you by name Gary) had had a "Happy accident" adding a CB 250 to a Supernait.  I then thought it might be interesting to hear how other forum members systems have evolved, have they followed a recognised upgrade path or have they evolved along a different route?  My own began a bit unconventionally but has now taken a more traditional route. There were lots of speakers and cables along the way but this is the simplified evolution of my Naim system.

LP12, CB 32.5/90

LP12, UQ2/CB 32.5/90  (my first foray into streaming)

I posted a similar thread a while back https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-journey-in-pictures

Nice to see a steady evolution of your system.

1989: Rega 3, Creek 4040, Royd A7's

Added an Aiwa cassette deck, then a Rotel CD player a couple of years later (the first I heard that sounded OK) and a Denon 260 tuner

Moved house, had some cash = CD 3.5 + flatcap, nait 3, Sonus Faber Concertos

Added T+A G10s Turntable to replace Rega

Swapped out nait for 102/180

Added HiCap

Replaced Denon with a  Yamaha CT1010 Tuner then a Linn Kudos courtesy of stupid prices on ebay 'cos no-one wanted them

Now 272/200, CD3.5 +flatcap. T+A TT, Kudos

No problem mentioning my name Bob. My system evolution would take up rather too much space here, but lets just say it started with a Rega Planar 3, A&R A60, Acoustic Research AR18's, changed to LP12/Nait/ Kans and has been various Naim combinations thereafter for the last 30 plus years.

Thanks Gary,  yes I too would take up many pages detailing the whole of my hifi evolution starting with big flashy 80's Japanese things with lots buttons and lights up until what you see now but for the purposes of this thread I only started my system 'evolution' at the start of my first Naim kit.

Fair enough. My journey started with Naim very early on. It's the countless pages of Naim components over the last 30 years that i'd have trouble remembering, let alone listing in any kind of order!

...Oh and forgot about changing the speakers to the Gurus...

Posted on: 15 June 2016 by dayjay

Hm, early 80s an Binatone all in one system for my 18th followed by a  Philips, I forget which model CD player (I was an early adopter) into a A&R Arcam Alpha and a set of Heybrook HB1s.  Then a variety of amps including Rotel separates, which were decent then and Audiolab with a Piink Triangle Turntable, plus assorted tuners and CD players of varying abilities.  And then the upgraditis drove me mad and I sold up, probably early 90s and bought a B&O all in one which I had for a number of years (it's now iin my conservatory and still works).  Late 90s/early 2000s I bought a Pinnacle Show Centre streamer and started to stream music and video into a JVC surround system and then a Yamaha surround sound system which eventually grew irritating.  Cue a few years ago the purchase of a Unitiqute 2 and a pair of Q Accoustic speakers (in January) I arranged to borrow a set of Guru Juniors the following Xmas and my dealer cunningly loaned me a Nap100 both of which stayed. I had a little wind fall and bought my Hugo which blew me away and I felt it needed a better amp hence my Supernait 2 arrived.  The Gurus left the building when my lovely wife bought me a set of Aria 926 and a Nat05XS for my birthday and around the same time my dealer loaned me a Hicap DR which also stayed.  Most recently I was itching to buy a 250dr which I'm not sure I need so I bought an RP8 and a Stageline which brings us up to date (excluding a shed load of cables and bits and pieces) and here I intend to stay with the exception of a couple of power cables.

Rega Planar 3, Creek 4040, Heybrook Hb1

Lp12/Ittock, Exposure VII,IV,VI amp, Gale 401 speakers.

Lp12, Nac 152/155,Flatcap XS, Kef 104/2 speakers

Lp12, Nac52/Supercap,155XS, Guru Junior speakers.

The Nac52 was a massive improvement over Nac152XS no surprise there!!

At some point in future will swap out 155Xs for either a Nap 250 or a pair of Nap 135s.

Garys enjoyment of the Nap250 is giving me plenty of food for thought.

Prem.

A lot of love for Guru speakers which is understandable because of their versatility when it comes to room and placement as well as that BASS! I too have a set of mk 1 QM10's they are my last step before I take a deep breath and shell out for some BIG proper speakers.  Interestingly the UnitiQute seems to be a bit of a gateway 'drug' for many (a great bit of business for Naim) it is to date the only bit of Naim kit I have bought new  it introduced me to digital music and to streaming ( I was a bit of an analogue only bore) I now have the best of both worlds.

As for the future when funds allow I think either a Dac or psu for my ND5 XS then an NDX possibly, depending on how the ND5 sounds withs a dac or psu. As far as amps go I'm really loving how my LP12 sounds into the 202/200, but who knows what offers 'I cant refuse' my dealer (and he is a dealer) will come up with and then the speakers Arrrrgh!  When I eventually descend down into those fiery depths it will be full of speakers and Hell will turn out to be an endless round of speaker demos.

For me, I had a Super Nait. The next Naim component is the Statement.
