New Telly + Naim = Confusion

Posted by: Guitarcul on 17 June 2016

Hi guys,

Hoping for a few pointers.

I have just bought a new Panasonic 55cx680b TV and after having an ancient tv for many years I realise the opportunities now available.

I don't want to go down the dedicated Home Theater or even the sound bar route as I would like to integrate the telly with my existing hifi if possible.  My pre amp is a 122x with 150x power and FC2x and my speakers are Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor Elipsa which were originally designed as the rear speakers of their 5.1 system but is an awesome two channel hifi speaker.

I know I can connect direct from the RCA out to the Naim RCA in but I just wanted to know if there is a better way (no hum etc) at minimum cost that is relatively straightforward.  The tv has a lot of connections including an optical out and an ARC (Audio Return Channel) along with HDMI 2.0 & 2.2 however the Naim is limited as to what it can accept direct.

I am far more into my music than home cinema however if there is a way to get great sound utilising my existing equipment then I would love to hear any suggestions.  If there are some more expensive options I am open to ideas but would really like to keep the cost down if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Forgot to say I have a metrum octave dac, could that be used to connect the tv to the 122x.

Cheers Mark

Yep, I'd feed it through the DAC to your 112X. The Metrum will be a better DAC than the one in you TV. Optical will reduce the chance of getting earth loop and if that works, it is the way to go. Check the sound settings on you TV so it is sending an appropriate digital format to your DAC and you should be good to go. Multiple sources into the TV (Cable Box, Apple TV, Blu-ray Player etc) should all work with minimal fuss using just a single input on your DAC. The advantage passing all audio through the TV is that AV synchronization issues are minimized.

Cheers Winky, sounds like a plan and the kinda straightforward answer I was hoping for.
