Unitiqute partnering speaker suggestions required
Posted by: David Weller on 21 June 2016
Having just joined the Naim family, I have upgraded from Bluesound Hi Res streamer to the Naim Unitiqute.
I'm using the system in my office and looking for recommendations for speakers to partner with Unitiqute. Most of my listening is done in close proximity and at lower levels. I listen to mainly blues, rock music.
Looking for small speakers as desk space is a premium, so something like B+W CM1 (newer model) or maybe a sub sat system like the Totem Kin ?
Speakers can be sealed or ported as not to close to a wall. Desk is 2m wide
Any thoughts re the above or are there other speakers I should get to see and listen too ?
David
I use Neat Iota's on my desktop, currently driven by a Sonos Connect amp, but soon to be a Unitiqute as I had a demo with the Iota's and thought that they were a very good match. I also listened to the Totem Mini Kin's without the sub but preferred the Neat's.

Blumenstein Audio Thrashers have been upgraded to sound even better. We have been happy with the original. They also have smaller Orcas. These speakers are designed to work with low power tubes but they sound great with the UQ2b. Price is right too. Check and see if they will do a 30 day trial for you.
Dynaudio Excite X14. You can plug the port if they are too close to the wall and sound great with the music you listed. Dyn and Naim make a great combo.

These would be a great choice. I use the older X12's with my Qute. I thought that they were miles better than the Neat Iota; much fuller range.
Yes the Dynaudio are fantastic, but I would also look into the Sonus Faber bookshelves, very very nice...

Love the look and style of SF but not as dynamic as Dynaudio. Not saying they're a bad speaker at all but for rock and blues I've found Dyns tough to beat. Plus the X14 is easy to drive and a small speaker that plays much bigger than its size. Not a bad price either.
Neat Iotas.
Best speaker i have heard with my UQ2, apart from my SL2s, is a pair of Russell K Red 50. The combination was simply stunning, but that was atop a set of Kan2 stands, and may be completely ruined with desk mounting.
Another vote for neat iota speakers, work well with my uqute
On my UQ I use Acoustic Energy AE301 speakers, don't let the £400 price put you off (ie too cheap) these sound great and can be placed right up against the wall connected via NACA5.
Another vote for Neat Iotas! They look stunning and sound even better! Mine are paired with a UQ in the bedroom, mounted on a tiled shelf 2" from the wall. I simply cannot believe how a speaker that tiny produces bass a ProAc Tablette wouldn't be ashamed of!
Echoing Gary’s comments, another enthusiastic vote for the Russell K speaker range.
I recently had an extensive demo with the Unitiqute2 at the heart of a system, expanded with power amps and also swapping numerous speakers in and out of the system.
I thought I’d found what I was looking for with either Dynaudio X14 or the Focal Aria 906, but then we put on the 50’s. The dealer had purposely left them till last as he wanted to show just how much fun these Russell K speakers are compared to the rest of the competition. They just entertain and communicate heart and soul. To reinforce the comparison, we went back through each speaker choice and then back again to the Russell K’s. A friend came with me on the dem and also concurred with the observations. Speakers auditioned with the Qute in order..
B&W CM1 S2: Just no. I found them rather uninspiring to say the least.
Rega R1: Competent but didn’t stir my soul. Surprising as I have Ela’s & Kytes in my AV system and thought these would be my first choice.
Focal Aria 906: Rather good and could easily live with them. Smooth, clear articulate and decent bass.
Dynaudio X14: Again, really rather good, great fun and enjoyable, if a little leaner than the 906's.
Russell K Red 50: Game over!
I could have more than happily loved with any of the above until I heard these little gems from Russell K. I’m just now agonising on whether to scratch an itch and hunt overseas for a pair of used Guru QM-10 MK2’s or be done with it and just plunge for a set of the Russell K entertainers!
Yes indeed, good aren't they! I'm afraid to say that Iotas, as fun as they are, are not in the same ballpark as the Russell K with the Qute.
For the desktop, check out TAS reviews for Audience 'The Ones', and Audience Clairaudient 1+1s. They are a coherent, full range driver, crossover-less design.
I have Ones (mk 1) on my desktop with a UnitiQute 2, plus small dual REL subwoofers (1 or 2 REL T5's work great for a desktop system). The Ones are position/aim sensitive as mentioned in the TAS review. I have them raised a bit higher, and pointed more directly at my ears, via Auralex foam wedges under The Ones stands. ISOAcoustics stands might also work nicely though I haven't tried them.
Once you have them set up correctly, the clarity, imaging, and even the dynamics to a very respectable volume, of this little desktop system is quite special.
Thanks for all the replies, some of the suggestions are not readily available in the UK. I now have plenty to go and find and listen too.
I own the B & W CM1 S2 and agree with previous that they are not delivering, especially at lower volumes.
Has any one any experience with the Totem Kin and sub system ?
If you can find a set, which will be difficult, Guru Juniors are rather wonderful on a Qute. Pound for pound that system is so good it's unreal and I rather wish I'd kept mine for another room
If it were me, I'd be looking at Totem Dreamcatchers. Brilliant little speaker which works well in most locations including on a shelf.
Frank.
DC are nice but a tough speaker to drive. Can a Qute handle them? I've had a pair before and though they are nice they are not great rock speakers.
Dreamcatchers are very easy to drive. We have them hooked up to a UQ driving our large main foyer (about 30ft X 20ft) without any problem at all. Most people who hear it remain pretty gobsmacked.

I recently picked up a pair of System Audio Aura 1's that are temporarily on my Qute in the living room, which they're a bit too small for, pending an office refurbishment. They're a Scandinavian brand and not available in many dealers. Small, front ported and can even be wall mounted. They're a nice "fast" speaker with light-ish bass so would work well for an office.

Agree completely, those little RK's just shine with 'Qute. If they had a forward facing port I would have ordered a pair of Red 50's without hesitation. I may look into the bigger Red 100's as they have the forward facing port, even though ideally, I believe they should have a little space around them.
So after considering the many suggestions, finding dealers that had a Unitiqute and one or two pairs of suggested speakers was tough.
Some were too large and outside of price range.
Managed to get to demo Unitiqute with Totem Dream Catchers, Totem Kin Mini + Sub and B+W CM1 S2s
The dream catchers too big for desk, so it was a shoot out between CM1's and Totem Kin Mini
The CM1's didn't come close with detail, space, timing and punch in the setting and listening levels I will be using.
Totems ordered...... my CM1's destined for another project or Ebay
Thanks to all who replied and helped
Did you get the sub for the Kins?
Yes I bought the package cheaper than buying separately

Too little speaker IMHO. They are cool for their size, but if you have room for bigger boxes you can find a LOT more speaker.
