20% off the price of Super Lumina Cables?

Posted by: Penarth Blues on 21 June 2016

Just had an email off a well-known HiFi retailer from whom I have purchased my Naim gear with the following offer:

"TRADE IN YOUR OLD NAIM CABLES AND WE'LL REFUND THE PRICE YOU PAID AGAINST A LIKE FOR LIKE PAIR OF NAIM SUPER LUMINA CABLES! IF YOU DON'T OWN NAIM CABLES, BUT WE'LL GIVE YOU 20% OFF SUPER LUMINA WHEN YOU TRADE IN ANY OTHER LIKE FOR LIKE CABLE!"

Now the English isn't brilliant so it's a little open to interpretation but it does appear that it may be possible to save some money here if you're in this market...

They'll show up in Aldi next!

I had that email too, sounds like a good offer to me

I've had the SL DIN to XLR cable on audition for the last week from this very same retailer so it looks like I'll save myself a few squid when I complete my SL full loom.

Do they have the same offer for Naim Classic boxes ?

Sounds like a good deal - if you would have bought them anyway at full price

mmm wish i'd had that email

You don't need the email, just go to the dealer. I had the same offer from Tom Tom and Audio T so I imagine that all UK dealers are doing it. You need to trade in 'equivalent cables' so a pair of 3m speaker cables made with bell wire from B&Q for about £3 should suffice.

Remember that Hifi sales are seasonal - far fewer sales in the summer when everyone is outside - and that 20% can easily be absorbed if turnover is increased.

cheers

I haven't heard the SLs, but I'm guessing at 20% off any cable suddenly starts sounding better.

Could be a real saving for our "Active" forum members.

I'm thinking about some speaker cables - I was already so the cheaper price could easily sway me

The price on Naim cable, say £200 for my  NACA5 or 20% off £3000 for the  solid core mains cable I use as speaker cable in the dining room?

Posted on: 22 June 2016 by Fueller

Yep, the way this is worded is a bad deal for naim cable owners - suggests 20% off for trading in non naim speaker cable or 'what you paid' for naim cables. Given my naca5 was £6.25/m in 2001 I'd get a handsome £43.75 off. Even naca5 new now is less than 20% of SL price. To B&Q for some bell wire it is then..

The big part of the equation for me is wouldn't those trading in do better than 20% off by selling their cables on the s/h market?

And how does the dealer expect to profit from the traded in cables? Could be a crapshoot on that end.

my current interconnect came with the amps , so was that free or somewhere between zero and the price of the amp?

An SL between pre & power is an obvious next step and very stealthy upgrade with a high WAF..

Speaker cables with an external crossover (OBXR) are a serious undertaking as I will need 6 pairs.....

If it's across multiple dealers then perhaps the dealer does not expect to profit, especially, on the cables the receive and the 20% reduction will be funded by Naim as a mechanism to shift more cables.  I.e. It's just a way of putting on a short term 20% reduction in the price of SL cables by Naim.  If it's only one or two dealers then I guess we know the mark up on cables is way more than 20% and they will still make sufficient profit for it to be worth while shifting them at -20%.  Anything they get from the traded in cables would be a bonus.

There is nothing to stop you selling your own cables second hand for as much as you can get. Just trade in some equivalent length cables made from bell wire that you bought for £5. Let's look for the positives here.

Posted on: 23 June 2016 by joerand

Hmm ..... head to the local hardware store, reel off the required length of lamp cord, strip both ends, and call it a speaker cable? Then sell the real stuff online? Sounds too good to be true. I suspect the dealer would call bullshit on that one.

Posted on: 23 June 2016 by hungryhalibut

You can get 79 strand speaker cable for virtually nothing at B&Q, which no dealer could argue with, as it is proper speaker cable. My local dealer did 20% off speakers when you traded in your old ones, and you should have seen what they took in.

Posted on: 23 June 2016 by Eloise

I suspect that they see no value in the traded in cable - perhaps just sent for recycling.  But the reduction split between Naim and the Dealer is made up for by the volume.  If they sell 5 sets at reduced price vs the 2 they normally sell in the same time period the profits are likely higher.

A fair old profit margin on the cable i expect. 20% off isn't going to hurt much.

Maybe more like a hint of panic about the stock value & sales forecast (turn ratio in the brown stuff)
