Synology 216j media server - random tracks...

Posted by: DNO on 23 June 2016

The Twonky Server on my old WD MyCloud NAS had one redeeming feature; when using Bubble, you could sequentially play random tracks from all albums in the collection.  When I try this with my new Synology 216j running totally standard DMS, it says this feature is not supported.  Is this a question of configuration or is it really not possible?

It is not possible with the Synology Media Server as it does not support the UPnP search functionality. You can install minimserver on your device. With this the random selection does work again. You can run both servers on the NAS at one time.

Right, thank you.  I'll find some info on minimserver.

And running both servers together is OK?

At least on my DS213+ the two servers do run fine together. The only problem that I can think of was too few memory.

I used to have Minim in addition to Syn's Media Server on my DS214.   Whilst they are both installed on the same OS, they do not - they cannot -  "run together".    The Syn. Media Server uses less CPU & RAM than does Minim,  but even so its nothing close to even 50%.  The DS214, 216j & 213+  have same 512 MB DDR3 memory & similar CPU's.

OK, thanks.  Some homework to do...

Not much homework needed,  when I said they cannot be run together it was a bit flippant.  They can both be installed but you can only run them one at a time.

You would see both options on the first upnp screen on the Naim app. Just pick the server you'd like to use.

Ah, I see.  That makes some sense.  So I guess I download minimserver and install it from within DMS?

Can it be easily removed if it's too much of a faff?

There is something to read. But it is only so much because it is very detailed. Do not be shocked.

Like this guides tells you, your DS216j has an ARM7 processor, so see the relevant paragraph for installing java (that is required for minimserver) is

http://minimserver.com/install...logy.html#Installing Java (ARMv7 models)

Uninstallation can be done via the package center as well (both java and minimserver each).

Brilliant.  Thanks again

Hi DNO -

It's possible to run both at the same time (so you can select which one you want to hear from) and also to stream (to two different end points, or renderers) at the same time on a Synology 213+ without exceeding even 50% memory and 25% CPU. ymmv of course, but easy to try, easy to ignore,  trivial to stop/disable and straightforward to uninstall the one you end up not using. Give it a whirl! Why not live dangerously and try plex as well? Same rules apply....

Regards alan

Plex...  Ooh.  Any pros and cons for Plex or minimserver...

Posted on: 23 June 2016 by alan33

Minim server hands down. Plex, for me, has too many video-centric aspects, but looks good from your computer (not so much streaming straight into Naim). I didn't uninstall, but I did hit "stop"....

Regards alan

Edit: (that said, it has cool album art drawn from web sources in "artist " view)

Minimserver it is then. Thanks

Yes, try minimserver first! The developer does help very, very well in the minimserver forum if you run into problems.

For random track selection from my Synology collection I use the DS Audio app on my iPad which can drive my NDX and Linn streamers. It can extract 100 random tracks at a time, connecting to the Synology's own media catalogue. Also a nice feature of being able to create and manage centrally stored playlists on the fly. So it's perfectly possible without Minimserver (which is worth having in any event), should you have access to DS Audio.

The advantage of BubbleUPnPServer is that it handles the playlist itself. (Therefor it is using the openhome standard, so all apps that support this are able to maintain the playlist (also at the same time. It is a shame that naim does not use openhome).) If your smartphone goes offline (e.g. because of deep sleep power saving) the playlist advancing still does work, because BubbleUPnPServer handles it.

The disadvantage of BubbleUPnP server is that you have to pay attention to clear its playlist after listening. Otherwise it can disturb playing of a naim-app-handled playlist the next time. If this happens the naim playlist is stopped after an track and the BubbleUPnPServer is taking over, playing its playlist.

Yes, I've noticed that Bubble likes to boss its way around!  I note the clearing of the playlist when finished.  Good point
