Flatcap vs. Hicap

Hola muchachos

I now find myself in need of a PS for my Prefix. The Naim options are Hicap or Flatcap - is there very much to choose between the two?

TIA

Yes.  Go for a Hicap and make sure it's in good health (i.e.recent or recently serviced).

The Prefix (possibly because it has very high gain and therefore requires a very low noise supply) is dramatically sensitive to the quality of power supply. It was very easy for me to tell the difference (for instance) between powering via a 52 or 552, and using an external dedicated Hicap and Supercap. Even with the powered input on the 52 (which uses a dedicated pair of voltage rails from the 52's SC), the Prefix was quite lacklustre. The powered input from the 552 was somewhat better, but still fell far short of a dedicated SC. This is inspite of an additional Snaic cable.

Speaking of the additional Snaic cable....one hidden advantage of using a dedicated p/s is it increases the allowable distance between the turntable and the preamp....the 1.1m tether from the table is very difficult to accomodate if it has got be plumbed directly into the preamp.

For some reason, I preferred using an external Hicap to the powered input of the 52. So a Hicap is a great match.....until you listen to what a SC does for the Prefix. If you scout around hard enough you may find some torrents I uploaded of a SC powered Prefix using an LP12/Geddon/Aro/Helikon SL.

+ 1 for the HC, just make sure it's the DR version.

If I'm not mistaken, 2012 was the introduction of DR technology to the PS's, Hence should be a healthy unit with less than five years!

Thanks to all for the comments.

I've actually decided to go for a Flatcap - I'm not listening to vinyl much lately and for now I couldn't justify the expense of the Gucci  stuff.
