SL2 vs. OVATOR S-600
Posted by: meni48 on 24 June 2016
i would like to replace my Sl2 speakers to Ovator s_600, the reason is that i really didn`t like them from the first time my current system included Nds (555ps)552(dr)500(dr),is anybody on this forun did this step before or any experience,my speakers cables are nac5 and sl between my Nds to 552.
SL2's are a much sought after speaker and extremely hard to find on the second hand market... I have recently purchased a stunning pair of SL2's to replace my SBLs and the upgrade is in my opinion awesome to say the least.
I believe Ovator 600's need space away from a back wall to work at their best - however SL2's were designed to be placed up against a back wall...
However, I am confident in saying that if you do decide to go for Ovator 600's - you will have a long que of potential buyers for your SL2's...
RSCH swapped to S600s recently, so it would be worth reading his thread.
Hi MENI48,
I just did such change a few weeks ago with a similar system (CD555 instead of NDS and 250 which will be replaced by a Nap 50 in a few weeks)
Well, despite some room contraints, being a smallish one, i can honestly tell you that it is a really worth upgrade.
I have previously expressed some perplexity about 600s but now, after some minor adjustments and run in i really like them. The most obiovious advantage over the SL2s is to a much more realistic portrayal of the music even at pretty low levels. filling the room with a lifealike scale. With SL2 or Sats at lowish volume the music seemed a little flat and uninvolving, while raising the volume at 10,30- 11 'o clock they became a little strained.
The only problem i have is with less than ideal recordings showing ponderous mid bass line (electric bass & synths) while with acoustic music bass and mids are really awesome.
Yesterday my dealer who helped me to re-package the SL2 told me that they remember him a Linn PMS.
Regards
Roberto

As HH pointed out, a very informative thread.
For example, the Ovators doesn't encompass the traditional type drivers. BMR system if I recall, but the point being resulting in a different sound from traditional Speakers.
But by all means, don't limit yourself to just the Ovators, and in the end, if you like the Ovators, with that fine front end of yours, it's a wrap!
Loads of threads with Speakers that go well with Naim, but personally I think all speakers fit the Bill with Naim, it's just Speaker preference!
Allante93!
I changed from active SL2's to active S600's some time ago. For me it was a very significant leap forward in SQ. Upgrading the NAP 300's to the DR version also gave a further uplift. I have the S600's some 25cm from the rear wall and they are not too intrusive, although the SL2's were better in this respect.

When I had SL2s, I did try to relate to 600s. But to my ears they really didn't cut it, much to my disappointment, as I was looking to them to be a viable replacement. They left me cold. It's down to your own preference I suppose.
A friendly plea - please stop using an apostrophe when referring to a pair of speakers.
Tony, I'm surprised that you mention Gerry's apostrophe in a thread where Allante uses capital letters for every other word and exclamation marks at the end of most sentences. But yes, you're right.
Luckily for me, S600s are so huge there would be no room for me in the sitting room, so the SL2s are going to have to stay.

Unless talking about the SL2's crossover or grills of course!

Must admit s600s (note no apostrophe) would look awful where your current SL2s (again no apostrophe) sit.
You should have seen my wife's face when I dragged in a pair of s400s to replace a pair of Ruark Talisman IIIs.

What makes you assume I did not have two pairs of SL2's?

What makes you assume I didn't know that?
And why would two pairs of SL2s warrant an apostrophe?

But we're happy that it's now acceptable to start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction? I used not to, but now do so occasionally. And it can be effective.

meni48 - are you saying that you never really liked the SL2s or that you stopped liking them from when they were first on the end of your NDS 555PS 552DR and 500DR?
Neither would make sense to me as I love SL2s, but I am hoping it's the latter - as buying something you never really liked would make no sense at all ![]()

Made the same point a while back. Also acceptable to omit pronouns. ![]()

Great ! I see you also use Townshend Seismic, have you a hard or suspended floor ? what about your experience ? i noticed that 600s tranfer quite a deal of energy around.
Once, the previous Italian distributor told me that some 600s installation have been more successfull in realtively small rooms than very big ones. My final position (for now at least) is 38cm from back wall, 65cm from side walls and 0,5 cm of toe in.
I am also confident that the forthcoming Nap 500 will bring more control and sophistication to the party.
Now decision is up to you MENI48

Hi, yes I have suspended flooring, and the seismic pods made a huge difference to the quality of bass reproduction. I now use them under my audio stands and under my recently acquired Roksan Xerxes 20+ TT. They have succeeded in removing all traces of bass boom. that I always assumed was due to room boundaries, for which I had tried many remedies without success. Well worth a try.
Gerry
Hi Gerry, thanks for the info, well done !

Roberto - I had similar bass issues with the 300 S600 combination on a suspended wooden floor - It may indeed be the culprit.

I have not suspended floor though.

Sorry - I thought I read you did.

When my S400's dealer (Suono & Comunicazione) came around the other day, noticed a little room mode and adviced me to try some acoustic treatment.

OK. My issue was a sense that the bass was not well integrated in the S600 which I put down to an (un-fixable in my case) room interaction issue.
Good luck resolving your issue.
