Very nice power amp. I really need to upgrade my 250s to DR versions.

Posted on: 25 June 2016 by ursus262

It actually took my breath away.  I've never heard anything quite like it before.

Several rerences on here but one reviewer said one the finest amplifiers ever made - or similar words to that effect.

It is indeed , well said Musicraft.  I upgraded a couple of months ago from a NAP100.

The downside is that new speakers are now on their way

I do like my NAP 250 DR - a very versatile amp. Having said that... Source first!

I know it gets tiresome hearing people who have spent large sums of money crowing about the improvements in their system. Still, here goes. The improvement from 200 to 250.2 was satisfying, but nowhere near the transformation from 250.2 to 250DR. It seems as though I have never heard my music before. I have more than 2,000 albums to hear again, not to mention the infinite choice on streaming services. Meanwhile the working life must go on...

This is all encouraging. I don't think I could stomach an anticlimax at this stage. For various reasons, the details of which I won't repeat (its all documented in another thread) my DR upgrade has cost a rediculous fortune and to add insult to injury Naim are behind again it seems, so it has been away (and still counting) longer than they said it would take in the RMA and neither my dealer or I have a good idea how much longer the unit will be with Naim.

The 250 DR will not be an anticlimax

It has the new 009 transistors, and the better DR regulation (than previous generation)

Which is why Jason Kennedy of the ear website, called it one of the best power amps he has ever heard.

It has the totally silent and inky black background, better bandwdith, while retaining all the pace and rhythm of the Naim amps and maybe improving on it. To me it is more fluid, more rhythmic, and music just flows effortlessly.

One of the best hi-fi purchases I ever made (with my 282).

Hi upgraded my 250.2 to DR ...... the 250.2 is very good..explicity,dynamic......however, the DR improves on it in every way....I am even hearing extra information....which some how the 250.2 missed! I have a 272 pre and I added a 555ps to this and the DR passed through even more. This is a stonking amp .... that needs a lot of running in. I am trying sl speaker cables at the moment ..... doh

Hi,

Your 250 came back to us at the start of the month (I believe that it hit us on the 7th of this month) and as far as I can tell has been completed and is on its way back to your dealer.

We quote an end-to-end turnaround time on DR updates of 15 days (it takes three days through service to do the actual update itself but there are processes at either end to do that take additional time) so it should have been finished on the 22nd and it was actually finished a couple of days ago - I understand that this is an overrun of several days and I'm sorry for that but from what you are saying it sounds like your unit has been away significantly longer than that?

I'm not sure why it has cost you a "ridiculous fortune" though as it should be a fixed price update and if you aren't forced to have your unit updated if you don't want it to be so I'm a bit confused there?

That's interesting detective work since I didn't have a chance to email support yet or anything and just woke up to see these messages . I just want to set the record straight on the cost. This has been documented in detail another thread (250DR vs 300DR: How much better) and the long and short of it is the shipping to and from Japan combined with silly mistakes by the carrier causing my entire document wallent of customs forms to be removed before inspection by HMRC leading to it being re VATted on return despite my dealer going 10 rounds with them and resupplying all the paperwork again from his end led to a total cost that is far far far above the nominal upgrade cost. My dealer is still trying to get HMRC to refund this - If that gets refunded by HMRC and customs at the returning end don't cock things up, the unit will come in at just under the cost of a new 300DR. I never indicated on that thread any fault on Naim's part and even my dealer has been exceptional. It was just a cautionary tale of Naim ownership in countries where there is no dealer or service centers and a thorough rant against hapless carriers and tax trolls.

The dates I am less sure of. Certainly the unit was with the dealer on the 2nd for forwarding to Naim by week of the Mon 4th. I wasn't aware it had been in transit so many additional days in the UK. So going by that, the unit appeared to be with Naim 4 weeks today. I do realise 4 weeks is 20 business days and only 5 over the 15 days in the RMA and if you knock off the tranisit days in the UK, that my dealer was also not aware of, that takes it down to 15 days and change. But as I said, it arriving late at Naim is news to me.

It would be interesting to see what Naim dealers are autorized to carry out
the Dr upgrades worldwide in order to recommend the most cost effective
route for overseas owners to take and if this would be an option.

Pete

I'd like to let this thread get back onto the OP's intended track of gushing about the glory of the 250DR

Posted on: 01 July 2016 by Marksnaim

I'll gush about mine then Currently using it to drive my Isobariks in passive mode. I don't have space to use the other 2 in active mode at the moment. Every time I listen I can't help but smile. It's a whole world of difference from the 250.2 and simply in a different league to a chrome bumper 250. To say I'm impatient to hear what they'll do in active mode is a massive understatement!!

Mark, good to hear the 250DR is working out for you. Just curious, when I was running my Briks in Passive bi-Amp mode, I experienced heating problems. Is the 250DR running warm?

Allante93!

Posted on: 01 July 2016 by Marksnaim

Oh yeah, quite warm. Nowhere near thermal trip yet but I've not really turned the wick up that much. The room's not that big. I do recall driving an old CB into trip years ago using DMS Briks. When I changed to PMS though the problem was completely eliminated.
