Has Anybody Tried 2 Hicap DR on the NAC282
Posted by: ryder. on 26 June 2016
I cannot seem to find any thread in the archive on this. Has anybody tried using 2 Hicap DR on the 282. Which configuration will yield a "better" sound quality, 1 or 2 Hicaps on the 282.
Any information would be appreciated.
Ryder,
You will surely enjoy the 282, HicapDR, 250DR. It is a wonderful combination. Enjoy it and rediscover your music collection before thinking about any upgrades.
A second Hicap should offer some improvement, but a good reason to avoid that is that the improvement is modest for the cost. A Supercap will bring a huge, transformational improvement, for a modest increase in cost over two Hicaps. Do not listen to one on your 282 until you can afford it. I was in denial over a Supercap because of the cost of a new Supercap DR... until I bought a 20 year old olive Supercap and had it recapped for not much more money than a new Hicap DR. But thinking about that is for another day. Enjoy your new system. It is for good reason described as a "sweet spot" in the Naim lineup.

Ryder - Don't worry I went through same path as you 202/HCDR/200 then 282/HCDR/200 then 282/HCDR/250DR
The 250DR is quite a bit better than 200 !
There is a very rich sound (in the best sense) of the 250 DR, no comparison.... The Naim regulated amps are much better...
' Morning,
Yes, definetely i am ! it took ages to run in/settle down. It's an early DR late 2012 unit but it has seen very little use at a dealer shop
Now i recently changed SL2s for S600 and now, with some particulary recordings, probably there are still little adjustments to attend ( speakers/seating position)
Going from 282 to 552 was pretty much as RYDER's exprerience, fuller sound, more informations, outrageus dynamics, at a bigger extent perhaps
Next week i will swap Nap 250 for a recent 500 (not DR) and i'm pretty confident that it will sort out a few problems.
Regards
Roberto
Thanks for the information and experience Charlie. Much appreciated. I believe I will enjoy the Hicap DR based system for a very long time before I attempt to look at the Supercap, and I will make sure that I can afford one before I do so. From all contributions here on this forum, it does appear that the Supercap DR is a major or massive improvement over the Hicap DR when used on the NAC282.
Cheers.
I picked up a recently serviced non DR Supercap and replaced the HCDR on my 282. I found the improvement, even with a non DR SC, to be anything but subtle. Having said that the 282/HCDR/250DR is pretty fantastic too.
Enjoy your new equipment when it finally arrives.

I fear that looking at a SC will prevent you enjoying what you have now.

I don't mean to distract you from the enjoyment of what you have now. One could just as easily suggest getting a 500 system or a Statement. But when the day comes, in the future, my point is that a used olive Supercap will give you much of what the nice black Supercap DR offers at a fraction of the investment.

Is your opinion based on experience? I've tried all the PSU options (DR versions excepted) and I can't say I agree with you. There have been many others who believe the Supercap is by far the better performing PSU on the 282. But each to their own. As is the usual advice, Ryder should try to audition the options himself.

Very good point, Chris!
The OP has just dropped a nice chunk of cash, I'm assuming Brand New, 282, 250DR, and HCDR, do the math that's a bundle.
Just checked his rig out on another post, not Bad:
Krell KPS -30i---+282--+SCDR--+250DR--+Harbeth
Beautiful Finite Elemente Spider Rack, electronics floating on ceraballs, Nice spacious Crib.
It's not that the OP can't afford the SCDR, he's just not buying the hype!
He's been around, 44 rating on the Forum.
And guess what Ryder, I feel you, but if nothing more than cosmetics, cancel the order on the HCDR, the Dealer will be more than happy to accommodate you with the SCDR.
That's right stop shipment! LOL
Enjoy, it's all good.
