New HDX owner needs some advice...

I have my HDX system in the living room, using Ethernet cable from my phone router. I control my HDX via my iPad Pro. In the bedroom I have a PC which is configured for wi fi. I wish to buy music on the iTunes Store and access this content on my HDX via my iPad. How do I do this ?

Copy it from the iTunes folder to the download folder on the HDX

Thanks for the reply. Would I do this on my iPad ?

If the PC is available on the network you should be able to pick up the files from the HDX without copying them at all. As I understand it, the HDX scans the network for all available music. I'm not sure how you do that, but I'm pretty sure you can. Bear in mind though, that iTunes tracks are MP3 and will sound pretty awful over the main system.

The easiest way is to copy the files over to the HDX's internal drive, folder: DOWNLOADS.

You can only do it via a network attached PC / MAC.

Why do you wanto to waste your money on buying MP3 files? You can get a CD of the same music, probably for less...

I've just checked - it can definitely scan the network and play all available music. This seems easier than copying stuff, and it doesn't clog up the HDX with a load of iTunes files.

Confirmed - yes it can. One caveat for that - PC / Mac mut be on or have a 'wake on network request' mode enabled. Otherwise the files will not be accessible to HDX.

If you do decide to try and read files from your PC, depending on what version of Windows you have, you may need to ensure your music is in a "shared" folder for the HDX to be able to find it.  If the folder that stores the music on your PC is not enabled for sharing, the HDX may not be able to locate it.  If sharing is enabled, it should find it and once found, will remember the location for faster access when you use it in the future.  Enjoy your HDX, once you're up and running and used to it, it's a great machine!

Thanks for all the help and advice, very useful. Just one reply, someone mentioned why I was wishing to listen to MP3 files. There is a musician named Syd Dale whose music is from the 60's and 70's. The only place to access his music now is via iTunes. If anyone knows otherwise I would love to hear, his music is from the Amphonic library which is only available exclusively via iTunes.

If you have the artist's albums on vinyl, you can make a CD-or-better-quality conversion to digital with a program like Audacity.  If you don't have the vinyl you can get it from a site like Discogs.

One downside of accessing all music currently on your computer is any duplicates of albums you may have ripped onto iTunes, will be mixed in with the high quality FLAC or WAV rips you've also done on your HDX. Because of this, I stopped sharing my computer's music and copied any relevant files (mp3's unavailable elsewhere) into the "Downloads" folder of the HDX.
