uniti 2 connected to an iMac

Posted by: Lazypaddler on 29 June 2016

HI - I am a newbie seeking some "how to set up "advice. I have my Uniti 2 playing music ( which i am very pleased with) but I don't think my set up is optimum
I have a Virgin router connected by ethernet to an Apple Time Capsule which is the wifi hub for my home wifi network. An iMac is linked to the time capsule by an ethernet cable. The iMac holds my "music" on iTunes and also runs Spotify Premium.
I have connected the Uniti 2 to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable.
Airport Utility shows the connection for Internet to Time capsule to iMac but it does not show the Uniti 2 (but I don't know whether it should)

The Uniti 2 sees and connects to internet radio stations
The iMac plays iTunes through the Uniti 2
The iMac plays Spotify through the Uniti 2
Facetime plays through the Uniti 2 rather than the iMac speaker, but other iMac noises (e.g. streaming BBC news video) plays through the iMac speaker - I don't understand why

I cannot see the "music" on the iMac from the Uniti 2- why doesn't the Uniti 2 see and list the "music" on the iMac as if it was a server ? The Uniti 2 shows no UPnP devices
I cannot access Spotify from the Uniti 2

I would be very grateful for any advice on whether I have connected the units in the best order and whether it is working as it should or not?

Is the Mac running any kind of UPnP software? This is needed to make your music library on the computer 'visible' to the NU2. To trot out my usual advice (only given because it's the route I know best), go to MinimServer's website, and follow the instructions to install it on the Mac. Then 'point' MinimServer to the directory on the Mac containing the music, let it run and index the music it finds, and you should be in business.

thank you for the advice - the only "music" software on the iMac is iTunes (which I am guessing is not UPnP software - I am now showing my lack of understanding), but I will explore MinimServer

You can also use Asset, which may be easier than Minim.

How are you playing iTunes and Spotify from the iMac.  I mean where are you slecting the Uniti as the destination?  To do that, I would think you need  an optical or analog wire directly between Mac and Uniti, in addition to your correct Ethernet wiring; but I do not see mention.

AirPort Utility will not show the Uniti, except in the list of connected nodes by MAC address, when you click the Time Capsule icon.

AirPlay?

Joking, right?  No AirPlay on Uniti.  To get the effect  of AirPlay, you would need an AirPort Express or the Mac wired via optical or analog into the Uniti.  Then you could stream from the Mac, or an iPhone etc.

hi,
iTunes is playing through the ethernet connection. The wifi is turned on for the iMac but the Uniti 2 box is working through ethernet and has not been set up for the wifi. I haven't made a separate optical or analog link. When I joined up the boxes I was surprised (pleased) that iTunes played through the Uniti device.I did not have to select the Uniti box and I cannot see an option to chose the output destination in iTunes (Settings shows that the iMac is using the internal speaker as the sound output). I select and play tunes from iTunes on the iMac, but I cannot see them from the Uniti box.

When I open Spotify on the iMac there is a choice of either playing through the Uniti box or through the iMac. If I chose to play through the Uniti box then it does - however I have to control the Spotify site from the iMac I cannot see it on the Uniti display

I guess Spotify is bridging the gap, detecting the Uniti as a Spotify device, and making the connection.  Gets the job done; but, as you observe, it isn't optimal.

I use MinimServer on my Mac.  I like it.  It serves your iTunes music collection to the Uniti.  Use Naim app and Spotify app on iPhone etc. to control all.

Yes, I was. Sorry, should've put a smiley on there.
