Next upgrade path for 272 and dr250

Posted by: Ricto on 05 July 2016

Hi All

I very recently purchased a Naim NAC272, DR250 power amp and focal 1028be speakers using QED silver anniversary speaker wire, i only listen to streamed music.

I am looking for my next upgrade path as soon as I get a fourth job to pay for it. Power supply, different speaker wire or perish the thought a different source?

Any suggestion would be helpful bare in mind I'm broke so keep it cheap but has to be worth it!

Good stand.

Dedicated mains.

Powerlines.

XPSDR.

Posh cables.

In that order.

XPS DR

I was thinking speaker cable but the power supply makes that much more  of a difference? I have a good heavy stand not Naim but spiked

Forget poncy cables, get some Nac A5 and an XPS2.

The one big upgrade that will really make your system shine has to be an XPS. In the meantime, for a less expensive tweak, speaker cable - I would look at NAC A5, or maybe Tellurium Q Black. Try to borrow some from a dealer and see which you prefer.

Upgrading your rack may well be worthwhile, it's hard to say how much of an improvement it will bring without knowing what you have now. The good thing about a decent rack is that it will get the best out of your current gear and any future upgrades. I would keep an eye out for a good deal on used racks including Naim, Isoblue, Hutter and Quadraspire.

Nearly £4k for a transformer!

Ive never auditioned anything but I think it would have be good to pay that, so I will have to submit to the auditioning I guess

But you bought a 250, essentially a big transformer, and a 272, essentially a computer, for those kind of prices. What's different this time?

Guess I thought that was it!

It is if you want it to be!

Think there is another similar post which Ive been following

Is there an idiots guide to Naim power supplies?

QED Silver Anniversary is definitely the weak link in that chain (I know, used to use it); and to suit the 250DR, I suggest NAC A5, and solder the connections properly.

I d suggest a very good rack, not less than fraim, especially to site 250dr if he hasn T. Agood system starts there, maximising potential. Ah and ditch that qed,if in doubt naca5 is a safe choice and good cable.

My thoughts too but definitely a significant upgrade.

You can alwasy spend £8000 and buy a 555PS DR - in a perverse way makes more sense than XPS DR

As others have posted, I would go NACA5 first, then XPS2, before breaking and changing everything for NDS..

Or wait for 372 if it's really going to exist ...

It's the Naim way...

To Infinity...and beyond!

Very recently purchased the gear, and currently broke? How about nothing? Just listen to it. If you must scratch an itch, maybe try A5. But the gear may even not be fully run in yet. Enjoy it for what it is, and leave the XPS for when you're not broke and you're more likely to notice the benefit because you actually know what your existing system is capable of.

You are missing the point Dave. Isn't all about upgrading, downgrading and upgrading again?:]

I still remember the times where we were triggering the following upgrades before even plugging in the next. :hehe:

Ricto,

You've just purchased what should be a satisfying system and you're immediately looking for an upgrade. Indicates to me there may be a fundamental flaw in the current system set up. I'd give serious consideration to the suggestions above for proper racking and beyond that cable dressing and acoustic treatment in your room. If you don't have those right you'll simply be chasing your tail up the Naim tree.

Tweak your system as it stands, cables have been suggested, but without the correct fundamentals box upgrades are merely a short-term bandage on existing incongruities.

Very wise words from Joerand!

Fully agree.

I agree with Joerand, why did you buy that system if you immediately want to change it as soon as you can afford to rather than appreciate it and enjoy it.

Did your dealer help set it up? Does it sound different to the one you auditioned? These are the areas I would look into. If it sounds very different to what you initially heard and leading to dissatisfaction is it perhaps because you have room acoustic/refelection issues.

Buying more or simply more expensive boxes can't and won't fix fundamental issues like this. You will end up chasing the rainbow ultimately most likely leading  to disillusionment and selling the whole lot....

Sadly, this is so true, and I've been there and done that. It's possible to get stuck in a loop of constantly buying bits, and changing bits, so that you have no idea what is doing what and whether things are better, worse, or just different.

In the OP's position, I would swap the QED for NacA5 or Tellurium Q Black and get a nice stand (light rather than heavy) and install dedicated mains if possible. Then do nothing for some months, if ever. The 272/250DR is a wonderful sounding setup and really doesn't need to be upgraded. That said, the XPSDR is the obvious upgrade, which raises the 272 to a new level entirely. After that, posh cables will raise the bar again, but are nice-to-haves rather than essentials.

Remember also that the 272 and 250, and the speakers too, will take some months to run in and sound as they should, so you really need to get that over with before trying other things. That said, do sort out the wires and rack sooner rather than later. Any of those suggested above will be fine.
