How much?

Posted by: thijazi on 06 July 2016

For those in the UK, how much would one expect to pay for a trade-in from a NAC282 (8 year old in mint condition) to a NAC552 (new)? or how much would you be able to pickup a second hand NAC282 for in the UK?

Trying to do some math ;-)

Msrp in Sterling British Pounds

552 = 19,755

282 = 4,395

Brand spanking new! But you must pay the premium.

A good dealer may cut you a deal, but don't expect anything more than 10%.

Now the Second hand market!

No warranty, unless you're lucky enough to pickup a  dealer's demo, customer trade-ins do not qualify for full warranty.

 I got lucky, so I thought. Dealer listed a 250.2 dealer demo, full 5 year warranty, Nice price, so I jumped on it, I asked for the SN,s but never got them, bad move, got the amp 5 year warranty, but a ten year old amp, packed in the older Naim box. I explained that a ten year old amp would have no trade in value, if I decided to sale it within the next  4 years. I managed to wiggle out of that deal, but learned a valuable lesson, always get the SN,s before purchasing, and if possible deal with a reliable dealer.

Now How Much, check out EBay, Audiogon, and Canuck Audio, and if you're lucky you might run into a 552!

Good luck!

The higher the trade in on the old item, the lower the discount on the new item. It's best to sell the old one privately and drive a deal on the new one. For the best bargain, sell the old one and get a preloved new one.

Excellent advice, every component I own was purchased on the 2 hand market!

Cdx2--+282--+HCDR--+ 3 x 250.2--+Briks

Check owner history, best if one owner!

Check SNs, best if less than 4 years old, I got lucky on a Brand new 2015 250.2, full warranty , but cost me 4K USD, still a savings of over 2K.

Good luck, they're out there!

Patience is the key.

How does one check the owner history?

You can't.

Naim will be able to tell you if equipment has ever been returned to them (and what for) if you give it the serial number.

I was offered 13,250 GBP for an upgrade from a 2008 year NAC282 to a new NAC552... wondered if this was a fair upgraded price...

Does that include a Hicap or Supercap? If not, that sounds like a very good deal indeed. Almost too good.

That said, you're not thinking of fronting a 552 with a DAC V1, are you?

True enough, though if you have an enlightened dealer, as I have, he takes the view that if I'm trading in kit previously purchased from him, then he's already made a decent profit on the original item, and can well afford to give an attention grabbing discount on the replacement.

When I handed over my 252 and Supercap DR, I was very happy to be offered the replacement new 552 DR at less than half the list price.

Net result, loyalty from many happy customers over the years, and, I am told, they shift a substantial number of Naim boxes each year.

True, forgot to mention, it is a trade in, I give back my SuperCap.DR and the NAC 282 and get the NAC552+PS552 for the 13250.......

HH is right you can't really check his history, but you can check his selling record.

It's Called sellers feedback, Most traders, and Forum members are very familiar. In fact, EBay even allows sellers to block individuals with negative feedback. But to answer your question, first you start with the SN, ask the seller has it been in for repair, and if so when. I,'ve done this and Naim was nice enough to confirm that an SN has not been in their repair facility. But of extreme importance, check the sellers feedback. If a seller has 3 100% positive feedback and sold all Naim gear, it's worth a chance. However, if a seller has 25 positive feedback selling horse shoes, and moth balls, perhaps you should pass. What you are looking for is what HH is talking about when he says a pre loved component. Case and point, a gentleman has been in hi fi for years, he's own Linn & Naim gear during the last.7 years, he's established a RECORD, selling his beloved gear.

Hence, you can check his selling record, and see that he's sold, or bought hi fi gear.

You get the idea!

Hope that was helpful.

You can buy a 2008 282 for £2,500, and a used Supercap DR from a Naim dealer for £3,500. So a private sale might net £5,000. So the deal is around a 10% discount on the 552, plus trade in. You need to take a view.

Looks like it isn't a bad deal, I might be able to negotiate it a bit lower as well.....Unfortunately there is no way to audition this one, there isn't any available in the country and no demo units either, I am making a call based on what I read on the forum, which seems to be pretty good...

I'd be concerned about the source though.

It's all about Market Value.

Everything is traded with the USD

British Pound = 1.30

Euro = 1.11

USD = 1

CAD = .77

Works out fine for me, I live in the US!

I shop CAD,  NAFTA, no tax, just duties and shipping cost.

However, products are priced accordingly.

For you guy's USD is good shopping ground, but different voltage, shipping cost, taxes, and duties, a deal Killer!

At the end of the Day, if it's new with warranty, and you can live with 13K in Pounds, do it.

Mind you, that's what the Brexit is all about!

Trade!

Just some Thoughts!

Oh, forgot the Chinese Yuan = .15

Hence, China is accused of de valuing their currency to market their products.

Thanks for all the comments... Looks like there isn't a red-flag concerning the price I am being offered, I will probably go for it and cap my preamp upgrades once and for all, need to get over the amount of money I will part with first!!

My source is currently a DAC-V1 (I stream lossless FLAC and high-res to it, so it is pretty ok for now, tried the Hugo but was not totally blown to make the leap, waiting for Naim to come up with a modern DAC (hopefully!) that is DSD natively and USB as well.
