SuperCap serviced; what is the expected burn-in time?

Posted by: u77033103172058601 on 11 July 2016

The S'Cap powering my SuperLine has just returned from a (Naim) service.

Does just leaving the unit powered on provide the necessary running in? And what is a reasonable time to expect the unit to run in?

A weekend of dullness has left me so deflated that I can barely even think of getting a record out of the cabinet.

I had my (then) Supercap serviced and DR'ed last Autumn and I must say it's run time seemed shallow and short. The biggest improvement I noticed was the initial one from a thorough warm-up. I was using mine on a 282 rather than a SuperLine so I don't know it my experience is comparable.

If the old caps needed replacement it should sound better right away.  Maybe switch everything off. Unplug everything, re-plug and check the cabling and the supports?

Good point. My SC wasn't due a service but it made sense to have one as part of the DR upgrade so I suspect it was operating well before and after.

Nick - a brand new SC DR took approximately 1 week to come 'on song' if that's of any help.

Thanks for that. I will leave the record deck unused until and unless I get over the tedious weekend I suffered and am still suffering from.

Just put your NAT05 on and have some music playing in a background - it takes a bit of time to warm those boxes up as you know.

It could well take a few weeks, but it should sound reasonably good straight out of the box. As advised above I would try a power down and re connect all plugs to wipe them clean.

The S'Cap is connected to the Superline, so playing a tuner through the system will not affect that part of the signal path.

Of course - silly me. Missed that part...

I was using my Dr'd SC to power my SNAXO, & it was great straight out of the box. Certainly a week will have it singing at its best Nick. Sorry to learn you had such a dismal weekend. Maybe a touch of plague?

Here's hoping, Tony. If I ever even consider going to another National Alfa Romeo day then I will need shooting.

Perhaps I should listen to some music to stop this state of deep despond I am in. Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary, perchance?

That good?

Got my serviced  2005 standard Supercap  back two weeks ago today. From a stone cold system it sounded huge and fantastic. Since then it has ranged from skull slicing bright to massive shake the foundations wallop. Right now it can't make it's mind up. I think this is going to involve a great deal more than a week or two of warming up. Only thing to do is heed the advice and hang in there.

Regards

Mike

Hi Nick,

Retire to the south of France for a couple of weeks and leave the irksome black lump simmering on a low light chez-vous. Or just break out a bottle of the red-stuff half an hour before a listening session. Perceived sonic upgrade guaranteed!

But seriously though; I would expect the opposite from new. A bit hairy round the edges but 'lively'. Strange.

Has the DR300 been powered-off and is possibly going through another mini run-in bump? DR'd amps can seem to have a seriously audible wobble for a day or two, several weeks into the running-in cycle.

Good luck with it.

John.

Am I the only one who enjoys the burn in period?

Having  said that, I don't recall any piece of Naim kit doing anything other than sounding superb  to start off with and then getting better.

I've not experienced any blips in performance  just a levelling off of performance when the improvement stops - with some equipment taking longer than others – weird

I know where you're coming from Chris. I generally hear 'hairy round the edges and lacking a bit of sophistication, but great fun' during burn-in. I never understand such comments as 'it was unlistenable for three weeks'.

"it was unlistenable for three weeks"

Only another week to go then!
