Speaker Shoot Out

Posted by: Bodger on 14 July 2016

This post is by way of a follow on from my “Any Magico users out there?” post. I was able to spare some time back in the UK this week to have a shop demo of several speakers: Focal Sopra II; Sonus Faber Amati; Wilson Sabrina and Magico S3’s. This list is more or less in ascending price with the Sopras being by far the most budget model of the 4. I currently use some old B&W 803S back home. KJ West One (thanks Jason) were able to more or less recreate my home system. This was 500 series electronics and NDS with a single 555PS as the source. I have a CDS3 at home but for obvious reasons, KJ did not have one to hand. I took along 4 CDs and the test tracks were:

Keb Mo – For What It’s Worth

Damien Rice – The Blowers Daughter

Roxy Music – Manifesto

Dire Straits – Tunnel of Love.

No real thought had gone into track selection. I knew the tracks quite well and these were ripped from CD prior to the demo. We also used Nathan East (Crazy) as a known example of a well recorded piece from the library. I would say that I have never had a chance like this to audition so many speakers. I have done home dems of 1-2 pairs for A-B which are easier tests to make sense of. I would also say that it was surprisingly hard work and I am not sure I want to hear any of these tracks any time soon. Apologies, in advance if the following description is some way short of the normal Hifi magazine hyperbole. We kept the volume the same throughout but adjusted for the Wilsons – see below.

Focals. First up and imaged very well. They had very controlled bass with Keb Mo, the acoustic guitar of Damien Rice was also excellent. Manifesto was a little tizzy on the hi-hat but solid in the lower registers. Dire Straits came over a little shouty overall but the CD is not the best recording. The sonic picture was not very cohesive on the last track. Overall a decent showing but not an edge of the chair ride by any means.

Sonus Faber. About double the cost of the Focals and provided better depth overall. Rather dark and rich in tone but provided some excellent detail, especially with Damien Rice. For my tastes, a bit too mellow but with good imaging. These were not on my short list but I was still glad to hear them. I am not sure of the vintage or release date of these but they rather sounded like last year’s technology. Possibly “better” than the Focals, depending on taste but for twice (plus) the price, they were not twice as good.

Wilsons. I really wanted to like these the most. Mainly due to their relatively compact dimensions which provides ample placement options around the house. These were a tougher load and I had to adjust the volume up to give a fair comparison. The presentation was again quite mellow but with some excellent detail on Damien O. Backing vocals here were very clear. Integration was excellent from low to highs, they were really quite seamless. There was nothing really to fault but not much to love either.

Magico S3. About 3 times the price of the poor Focals. First impression was speed, these are fast speakers. They are also quite tall units and I think I was sitting a little too close but this was room constrained. Imaging was good but not the best of the 4. Resolution, timbre and frequency extension was really impressive. The backing vocals in the middle 8 of Damien Rice were perfect. For me, these are extremely realistic speakers, a piano sounds like a piano, etc. Yes I liked these. I think these have the largest bass drivers of the 4 but control was excellent.

I took along a work colleague who is in no way a hifi addict. He owns a boom-box. He preferred the Focals, I the Magicos. Horses for courses then. Much to consider and with all these things, I can only imagine what the test would have thrown up if done in my own home. As this is a non-starter, this will remain speculation only.

Thanks again to KJ for the hospitality and hard work schlepping those speakers around. That was also the longest run of SL speaker cable I have seen. I also got to touch a statement system, but not hear. Next time possibly.

HI Ayap1,

nice post, good to get the family involved too.

I wouldn't sign on the dotted line until you get final confirmation in a home demo; I know the 800 and 802 are huge beasts but if you've fixed on one of them then the dealer should be happy to give you a home demo before sale ... just to confirm that they work in your listening environment.

Enjoy the next dem,

Allan

Thanks Allan

Will definitely get a home demo before I say yes.

HI Ayap1,

very interested in your demo experience. Hope you can keep us informed of your ultimate selection result.

Ayap1, what electronics did you use for your demo?

Brave man trying the 800D3. As I said earlier in the piece, I avoided this for fiscal reasons. They were right outside the demo room too. I'm sure they winked at me at one point.

Did you get to hear the last 2 speakers on your list yet?

Hi Bodger

Electronics used were 500 series except the source.Instead of CD 555( which they don't have) so NDS was used.

Heard 1 of my last 2speakers on Friday. It's Vivid Audio Giya 4 driven by Devialet amp.Dealer said he can bring to my home for a demo so wait and see. Last speakers is Kudos Titan. When I start home demo will ring this dealer to bring titans to my home .It's going to be a busy end of year!

This should be the last instalment of my particular speaker saga which began in earnest mid July this year. I have had the opportunity to listen to seven very different speakers but only one of these was a home trial. Long story short, I now own a shiny new pair of B&W 802 D3’s. They arrived last Saturday and are now warming nicely. The 802s replace a 2005 pair of 803S. After about an hour of unpacking and generally faffing around, unpacking, getting the ramp in place, removing transit screws for the mids etc., we got some music.

The weather has turned recently here in Athens and the units were very cold to touch. Even so and out of the box, the music was a quantum up from the old 803’s. Over the course of Saturday I got some hours in them and borrowed a pair of ears too. Lots of detail and bass grunt but also not surprisingly, not the sound I had previously heard during the demo with well run in samples. It was like the drive units were waking up at different speeds and the soundscape was not together yet. Not surprising as the mid units had only been released from the transit position for a few hours.

Sunday was better. I had left them playing quietly with a CD on repeat overnight. I reckon it will take 100 hours or so to get there. From the outset I did hear new things on familiar tracks, both vinyl and CD. The sound was opening up and becoming more satisfying. This was only days 1 and 2 so lots more to come. I could live with the sound right here, so any improvement, which is inevitable, is great to ponder. Last night started with a rough patch, rather harsh for 20 minutes or so. As I had mostly been running in with very low volumes, I moved up to 12 o’clock on the pre. The music just came alive.

Some other vague observations. Listening is extremely enjoyable at background to low volumes; they deliver a very complete image even when barely audible. I guess the drivers are getting along. They appreciate being given some “welly”. It seems the louder the better. Walking over to change a CD sounded like I was getting closer to the stage. Previously I was aware that I was moving towards the left speaker. They seem to disappear behind the music – you are not aware of two boxes at all. The sound is coming from over there. This is not to say there is no image as imaging is great but it is from points in space not left or right.

No worries about making the right choice now. Thanks to all for the feedback since July. It is now a good place, to know that the itch has finally been scratched. Once they settle down more I will fiddle with final positioning. To date simply plonking them down where the old ones were seems to work just fine. I would also add finally that the finish is absolutely first class.

Well done Dave,

Hours of wonderful listning ahead of you

12 o'clock on your pre - I can barely get above 9 ...

Great to journey but even better to arrive.

Enjoy,

Allan,

Thanks. Sit back and enjoy now. 12 o'clock was a bit of a one off but the point remains.

bodger,

congrats! I am still curious about the change that happens  to the 802d3 during the burning time and hope you can keep update it. I feel so enjoyable to follow your thread.
