i've ripped this and it goes through ok but sounds very distorted on playback????
thanks
Were you using a computer drive and a Mac? Occasioanlly when ripping like that I got very distorted files - no idea why.
I'd suggest trying to rip again, preferably to AIFF.
Using external apple SuperDrive into Mac mini which has been flawless into the Mac mini for several years....

That's what I thought
My SuperDrive generally behaves well. On odd occasions the ripped copies were just plain wrong.
What muse to rip?
if you'be not already, I would try XLD.
What a thread, the forum equivalent of "Detectorists"

+1 Recently found Apple ripper did not accurately rip some tracks off Ben Watt's Fever Dream properly. Currently re-ripping 1200 CDs! Guess I'm slight OCD.
Does have some trouble with copyright control CDs though.
Saw the original post and thought it was "Twenty Questions" or Billy Butler's "What have I got in my hand?".
Im sorry its a very dull post but to rip a disc and find it played very distorted was odd as I've ripped 230GB of music and never had it before so it threw me a bit hence the question
Out of 100 CDs I tried ripping on my Apple Mac, around 5 came out scrambled. Got a UnitiServe SSD since then...

I've quite recently ripped a new CD of Prince 1999 using a MacBook, the Apple USB CD read/writer and dbpoweramp.. All was fine here. Sorry probably not that helpful but at least here I could create the rip with no issues. Strange though it may sound, could it be a faulty Redbook CD?
sjw,
Have you tried cleaning the CD or checking for radial scratches? It might play on a CDP but not successfully rip. Otherwise you could probably find a used replacement for a couple bucks and try ripping that.

Adam,
Good luck with your US. Given the price of used CDs replacing those five seems a more cost effective approach to me, though I don't know how many CDs you have to rip overall.

That was few years ago - I had approximately 1200 CDs at that time. Now even more (where did they all come from???
).
My example was to illustrate a % failure rate I was getting - I find 5 our of each 100 to be more illustrative than 5%. Mind you at that time I was trying do it via iTunes, ripping to 44.1 kHZ / 16 bit AIFF.
As you've seen from my 'Dead UnitiServes Society' thread I've been a happy owner of a US for the past two years
put these same cd into macbook and it ripped fine.....transfered it with a usb to the mac mini and plays fine
JUST ODD!!!
A great album btw. (If only the sound of the recording would be a bit better. A problem I have with many prince albums since listening to them with my naim uniti 1. But I have the feeling that it did become a bit better since upgrading the streaming hardware to the current version. Cleaner sound, more exact (so less harsh) and a little more of bass. Especially the last I was missing before (and still do sometimes). Oh, a little bit off topic...)
