Very cool.

It's interesting to hear how much it sounds like a standard Strat. Clearly the body material doesn't really matter and it's all down to the electronics.

Maybe we can convince the good folks at Gibson of this, then the outrageous asking prices for their Les Paul reissues might reduce to more affordable levels.

As things stand, I'm finding ownership second only to Naim, when it comes to expensive hobbies!

LPs are definitely out of hand these days...it's one reason I have a SG instead. (That and avoiding left shoulder pain - lol.)

I've never been a fan of the premium-priced re-issue (and even less so of the "relic"). If I'm going to drop serious money on a guitar, I want a modern machine. Plenty of value available there. PRS etc. at the higher end, but Godin and Ibanez (amongst many others) offer great value at a more reasonable price. Fender and Gibson are also fine (I have a modern Telecaster), but just not the flashy reproductions.

Well, I do think that the reissues coming out of the Custom Shop, are substantially better guitars than the regular Standards, but the price hike for the so called "True Historics" , in 2015 was something of a joke.

Added to which, we seem to be paying through the nose here in UK, even allowing for import duties...............maybe this will be addressed post Brexit!

I'm happy that my '58 & '59 reissues predate this, and I'll just content myself with those, and stop perusing the dealer's websites.............just to look, you understand.

I have a Gibson Les Paul VOS R0, but not a relic - I reckon if I ding it and mark it, it will become a relic version through natural ageing. Fortunately, no marks so far. I had a genuine 1962 ES335, which was a thing of beauty, naturally aged, and it played like a dream, but honestly the VOS LP plays just as well (and whispered) if not better.

You don't have to whisper to me. Much of the mythology around late 50s early 60s guitars is just that, mythology. I do have a hankerin' for a 1961 Stratocaster, but not becasue I think the $30,000 instrument will be better than a $3000 modern one.

Winky,

You're quite right about the mythology aspect, Gibson have turned this to their advantage, big time.

I've been lucky enough to have a play on two different vintage '59 Les Pauls, and they were nothing special, certainly no more inspiring than some of the current reissues.

I do believe that one's choice of instrument is because that particular guitar "spoke" to you at the time, whether that's a question of setup, electronics, the amp in use, or............price!

Like most folks, I've got "the one", a 2013 '59 Les Paul reissue, which you will have to prise from my cold dead hands, but I fully accept that the search may not yet be over.

My modern American Deluxe Telecaster is a great instrument. All the better for having low noise pickups and individually adjustable bridge pieces. More options on pickup configuration and locking tuners, too. Sure a late 50's original would look good on the wall, but I'm not really seeing how the payability or sound could be better. But maybe I'm just a muggle and can't feel the magic.

NGD!

I've just picked up, well three weeks ago, a new Les Paul.

It's a Les Paul ES, and comes from the Custom Shop in Memphis..................and, wait for it, it's a hollowbody!

Sacrilege, I hear you say, but seriously, it's an instant cure for the neck and shoulder problems brought on by the sheer weight of my existing Les Pauls.

Sounds great, looks great, and I'd certainly urge other Les Paul fans out there to check these out, though it's supposedly limited to an issue of 100 worldwide............until, of course, Gibson pick up on the fact that they appear to have sold out, and push out some more.

Happy playing,

Dave.
