What's wrong with my music?

Posted by: Ricto on 18 July 2016

Ok this is a different question than has been posted before. So you listen to music you are familiar with AND think that is different good/bad sound AFTER an upgrade? The question is is it your system set up that is wrong or is right.

This question insist's you listen to one of the song's posted and analyses the out come.

The reason I post this I listened to Justin Bieber "love your self" (that's the song) I want other people's unbiased opinions of that song based on my new findings am I right or wrong? Forget the music choice but the musicality of the reproduction.

So I have moved the speakers either side of a fireplace, before I had quiet parts to the song now there is still sound i.e echo, music or is it me ect..

I am sure I am not the first to think of this question but am hoping I am the first that other unbiased people can listen to music give it's pluses and minuses for listening not on music choice but musical fidelity.

Also I think we all want to expand our choice of music based on musical fidelity which I hope this will do

I think this is an interesting thread. I did buy a couple of audiophile quality CDs a few years ago. They are jazz type albums. They do sound very good but two things, I've never used them to test upgrades and I very rearly listen to them.

I've got a Latin American compilation double CD from the 80's which is a great one to play on a day like today with the Mercury rising (in the UK). On an earlier Naim set up there was a hint of distortion but since the NAP 300 and SL cables it sounds very good as does a James Last compliation CD I bought shortly after his death. There recordings are not great. They lack the depth you might expect from a big band. My parents used to listen to his stuff, I can still see the Readers Digest box sets of LPs next to the mono record player linked to another matching speaker box to make it stereo.  So I thought I'd bring on the nostalgia by listening to him again.

There are songs, which no matter how well they might sound,  that I do really detest. If they get played on the radio it gets turned off. One is 'Come on Elieen' and the other which I really can't stand is the one that repeats 'Lovely Day' over and over. To me It's just so irritating.

I know I've got CDs in my collection that were bought because I liked a particular track on the radio but a number had not been played since my latest two upgrades but I now enjoy many of the tracks that perhaps I would have skipped. A fusion of improving the mechanics of hi-if which allows you to get more involved with the music. I know when this happens I find myself saying I quite like that now. PS you could play the tracks I've mentioned above on a Statment mark 2 and I still wouldn't like them!

Yes, Anne with the 'E' is correct, that was my mistake.  I am really glad that you like the track enough to listen to more.  The Blue Mind album is a really nice recording, amoung the best in my view, but as you have found it seems, captivating musically too.

Hi Harry

I was really looking forward to this song as they have done songs with metallica, not sure it is a song though more a racket, really sounds  like some one trying to trash the stage no reproduction or other benefit basically its crap! Sorry lol

There i's nothing you can do to make me li'sten to that 'song.

Never say nothing Winky. Even I was able to sit through Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" so long as it was attached to the unrated version of the video

I tried to watch that a while back, but couldn't stand more than 20 seconds. And he stole it anyway.

Music I consider bad never sounds good just because it's well reproduced.

Music I consider good always sounds good however it's reproduced.

Music I consider good always sounds better if it's well reproduced.

Addendum : I guess you need to have a streamer to just listen to any song not suggesting any one should line our little beibers pockets  purchasing an album

Im going to listen to Robin Thicket tonight UNRATED

I remember when I was younger, watching a Madonna video that was pretty racy for the time. I mentioned it to someone and they asked whether the song was any good. My reply was that I had no clue, as the sound doesn't play when the VHS tape is running in slow-motion.

Yeah I do recall that video

Posted on: 20 July 2016 by Ricto

Hi Winky I just had a derrrr moment, I didn't look at the video you posted I only listened to the song last night. My new review of the video  is its very very good!

There's music I get now that I never used to, the new Vienese school for instance, I'm sure that came about partially because my system has improved to the point where I can make sense of it but I was also willing to give it a chance. As for Bieber, there's some music I just don't want to like.

You can get a good polish on a copralite so maybe it's just a matter of time.

Some years ago, I saw a music video by the White Stripes that featured Kate Moss pole dancing in her underwear.  I remember thinking at the time, now this concept is realised, why would you do anything else when making a music video?  Then Robin Thicket (or someone else) came up with the video for Blurred Lines, and again, I thought, this is good, why are all music videos not like this?  Fact is, great though they can be, music videos are often a distraction, diverting our attention from how poor the music is.  I'm OK with that though, as long as the brunette with the more than ample boobies features in it.

Posted on: 20 July 2016 by Innocent Bystander

Well, despite being non-listener to pop music, and a non-viewer of pop videos, not having a clue who Robin Thick might be, the image conjoured up by the last post is one which I can wholeheartedly empathise  - nothing to do with music, and not in any sexist way, purely biology...  Now, what was this thread about, exactly?

Posted on: 20 July 2016 by Solid Air

Quite honestly, this thread seems to have taken an odd, and slightly creepy, turn. There are other places for lasciviousness over young women, if that's what you want. Count me out.

What's wrong with my music ?  As disingenuous and incredulous as that sounds - Justin Bieber is no George Micheal

Posted on: 20 July 2016 by ryder.

I don't listen to Justin Bierber and don't care too much about him, though I have read about Justin's personal life with Selena Gomez. Don't bother about people's opinions as the music that you love will eventually take precedence over everything else. What is the point to have a hifi system when you cannot play music that you enjoy.

I have someone commenting that I shouldn't play Coldplay on the 282/250 but I thought it sounded great on the system, and I love Coldplay's music especially the recent albums.

Posted on: 21 July 2016 by joerand

Purely for analytical reasons I watched the unrated 'Blurred Lines' video without sound and the presentation looks completely nonsensical. Add the music, whether you like it or not, and viola the movements become dancing and make rhythmic sense. So even though I don't care for the music, that music makes the package as a whole more entertaining. I would still hesitate to say whether either the music, video, or combined hold much artistic merit. As a controversial publicity grab it seems to have done its job.

Posted on: 21 July 2016 by SongStream

I would have thought that was true of almost all music videos, in that they would make little sense if not accompanied by the music through which they were conceived.  They are generally pretty abstract, and just eye candy really.  And regardless of nudity, often more gratuitous than the example in question.  If you want to see a really really really bad, and I mean really, bad, absolutely disjointed, irrelevant, and at times too literal to the song lyrics video......well, check this out.  And if you've not seen it before, do watch in full, it's absolutely hilarious.
