Best budget split for amplifier/streamer and speakers

Posted by: Erwin on 20 July 2016

After i sold my PMC Twenty.22 speakers to replace by the PMC Twenty5.22 i am wondering if this is the best move. I have a Naim Unitilite i really like, i also liked the 20.22 a lot, but perhaps i should upgrade the Unitlite and buy cheaper speakers? So my question: what is the best setup soundwise?

A Naim SuperUniti plus KEF ls50

A Naim Unitilite plus PMC Twenty5.22

Both setups cost about the same but the budget split is very different. Or is there a better split?

The components i have chosen above i all like a lot.

I fear you won't be the first to regret the Twenty to Twenty5 upgrade. From your shortlist , SU plus your new Twenty5.22's would be the best option, but budget counts and the LF50's get rave reviews. As ever, you pays your money.....

Sorry not to be more helpful,

The SU is miles better than the Lite, but the new PMC is an incremental change to the previous model. Keep the 22 and get the SU.

If the Twenty.22s suit your preferences and the acoustics of your room then keep them and get the SU (as per HH).

Note:  If The PMCs do suit you and your room, then the KEF's probably won't, as they have completely different characteristics.  Room and listener preference matching are the most difficult aspects of selecting speakers.

If you've already sold the PMCs, why are you only asking now?  You've already burnt your bridges and now you'll have to start auditioning from scratch, and you should start looking at a much wider range of options to shortlist.  In this situation... "If I were you I wouldn't start from here!"

A friend of mine has a Unitilite with Twenty.23s. The system sounds ok, but the speakers really deserve a better amplifier.

I believe that "budget split" is a silly way to pick components.  Of course we all have a budget, BUT, I would not let some pre-defined split dictate what I listen to.    Especially with speakers, more expensive may not equal better sounding . . . to you, in your home.

If you like the UnitiLite, I assume you'll like the SU even more.  I own a Qute2, and have listened to the SU a few times at my dealer.  The SU really is quite nice, and quite a bit "more" then my Qute or the Lite.

Got to agree with this. I also reckon the SU is the way to go.

Most definitely SuperUniti

I run an SU into B&W 683S2s and am very happy with the combination. I upgraded from a Unitilite last year and the improvement was very large.  Much larger than my previous speaker upgrade with the Unitilite (B&W 684S2 to B&W 683S2)

Definitely recommend the SU.

My PMC 20.23 sounded wonderful on the end of my UnitiQute; superb on the end of a NAP200 powered by the UnitiQute and now sound divine on the end of a NAC-n272 + NAP200.

I had SU plus sonusfaber venere3.0- auditioned New PMC24 and old Proac 2.5 to replace the SF, settled on the proac as it was really musical to my ears . PMC24 were a trifle bright in the top end. I would try to find a new /preloved PROAC D30R or D20R depending on your budget and invest in the SU. Bewarned, going higher on PROAC ( I got a deal on the D40R) , I ended up upgrading from SU to 272+250DR
