Upgrade to NDX from ND5XS
Posted by: nickpeacock on 20 July 2016
Well, I'm due to pick up an ex-dem NDX in the next couple of days, to replace my ND5XS. I put down a small deposit on it at the start of the year and have waited patiently since then.
What should I expect, in your opinion and experience, from this upgrade?
Any top tweaks I should know about?
1. Read the manual in its entirety
2. Choose the options you wish to turn on (and turn off those you don't)
3. Create a set up plan
4. Execute the plan, then sit down with your most favorite album/track, crank it up and smile.
That's all there is to it.
I guess you will still be using NDX with your Chord Hugo, so have effectively upgraded just the 'transport' element (if that's the correct terminology) from ND5XS ..... and won't be using NDX bare with its own internal DAC?

I'm expecting to retain the Hugo. I'll try ND5 + Hugo, followed by bare NDX, followed by NDX + Hugo.
(But I might have a hat warming in the oven, if the last isn't best.)
There is a clear difference between ND5XS nad NDX used as 'transports'. In favour of an NDX of course.
Enjoy your new NDX!
You should expect a lot. And you will get it. The NDX is infinitely more poised, detailed, insightful and above all, musical. Around the time that Naim were bringing the NDS to market and afterwards, I heard the ND5 compared to the NDX compared to the NDS in one session, through the same system. on three or four occasions. The NDX always wiped the floor with the ND5 to my ears. Although I'm currently residing in the NDS retirement village, I have no doubt that in the stand alone streamer range the NDX is not only peerless at its level but represents the best value.

@Harry - interesting. I recall the same from a demo of all three at the Bristol HiFi show a few years ago!
I might have been there too.

I have used both into a Hugo and concur.

Ok peeps - NDX now installed and running. Too early to give a coherent report.
One minor issue you may be able to help me with: I have set up system automation so the NDX remote can successfully control volume on the 252.
I have set up the Naim app to show volume.
BUT for some reason the Naim app won't actually increase or decrease the volume. Minor issue but niggling me.
Can anyone help?
(I only have one input into the 252, namely the Hugo on the CD input.)
As you've just moved from ND5 to NDX & assuming all you've done is swap the RC5 wire it should be ready to go. So it might be a case of going over the NDX settings one more time in 4.9 The System Automation Menu & also double check you have the cable in the NDX RC5 out (Remote Out)
Thanks, Mike. Had put the remote cable in remote input not output. D'oh! All working now. Where would I be without the forum?
Right. Time for a single malt with ice, sit back and put this NDX through it paces...
Don't forget to turn the volume up
............... & easy on the ice, better still no ice more scotch
Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity' from The Mix is giving me goosebumps.
It's gonna be a late night...
Have you tried the version from the Minimum Maximum live album - it's even better.
Shamefully I don't have that album. Might order it now. Good tip.
(Though in fairness I did see them play it live at Tate Modern. Twice...)
Sounds like you are in for a Tour de Franće
If I could work out how to post pics from my iPhone to this site I would post the pic of them in their special onesies at their consoles (doubtless playing 4-way Battleships...)

A bit like Komputerworld cover?
Just so! One day I shall devote the hours it takes and learn how to do that.
(Seriously, they're playing Battleships, right?)
Well, this has been a lovely evening of music. I've had enough Naim upgrades that I shouldn't be surprised any more, but just worth saying that this upgrade hasn't disappointed. Not a bit.
Nick, glad it's sounding good. Now, there is a little trick where you can get even better performance on your setup. You are using a 252 with only one input, the Hugo. The 252 like most NACs needs one and only one earthed ground... Naim by default use their CDs to provide this, and other Naim sources have a switch on the back to enable this if you don't have a CD player. The Hugo floats its ground. Therefore if you Earth the Hugo signal ground.. Or use another Naim source connected to the NAC set to chassis ground you will get a small but worthwhile improvement. You will notice this most likely in low frequencies and very low level detail.

Thanks, Simon - I had this in mind and looked back to your post on this point. Just to check I have it right: I have run a lavender i/c Din from the NDX analogue output (which I have disabled in settings) to an unused Din input on the 252 and set the NDX to 'chassis'. Correct?
