272/250DR, one year on

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 20 July 2016

Last July, having had a SuperUniti and PMC speakers for two years, I decided to push the boat out - but not too much - and get a 272 and one of the first 250DRs, with a Quadraspire SVT to sit them on. Then, a few weeks later, in a stroke of incredibly good luck, following a tipoff on the Forum, I was lucky enough to get hold of a lovely pair of maple SL2s. Then in October I added an XPSDR. Fast forward to December, and a set of SL speaker leads, and then to January and an SL din to XLR lead. With dedicated mains and Powerlines already in place, I'd pretty well maxed out the 272/250. It ran in over a few months and is now working as well as it can.

I'm now in a really good place where I've effectively forgotten about the Hifi entirely and just sit down and enjoy the music. The system just gets out of the way and lets the music do its thing.

It's astonishing what three boxes and some ageing speakers can do.

I never had a good solid wall for my SL2 so I'm sure I didn't got 100% out of them, had to add an n-Sub. But I do remember that musicality they could do. Naims best speaker ever after DBL?

I know it's a matter of personal taste, but have you heard the Orators 800?

@ Jonas, and if you think those Titan sound great now, just think how they will sound when Naim Reaches out to Kudos, and you activate those Babies!

Lawrence Dickie Founder of Vivid Audio. I did hear that Naim did a special hook up with their Giya GT2s, a 4 way deal, with Naims Snaxo.

"Laurence Dickie: "I have always been a keen advocate of the active approach to loudspeaker design, believing that the direct connection between amplifier and voice coil offers the purest route and that the precision and linearity of active electronics give a clear advantage over passive alternatives. However for pragmatic reasons we felt it unwise to go to market with only active speakers. An important part of the design phase of the first Vivid Audio products was a re-evaluation of passive crossover design. It has to be said that the use of computer-aided circuit analysis has really changed the game. The accuracy possible to meet target responses while presenting a safe load is quite remarkable. This coupled with drivers which present constant impedances across a wide range of drive levels, non-polar film dielectric capacitors and air-cored inductors has permitted us to create passive designs which really challenge the active alternatives.”

Just some more thoughts!

No I haven't heard Ovator 800. I Love the look of them and I'm sure they sound great. Still that are HUGE and can't be placed near the back wall so for me they wouldn't be a choice (with family).  But from what I heard they are brilliant.

I also think that the old passive/active way of seeing is broken by Statement.

One Statement amp compared to three 500, three speaker/Din-CLR cables, Fraim etc would probably just show one thing: that Statement sounds better. I'm guessing here but that is my take on it after listening to Statement two times.

Yes, you may be right, But I bet Kudos made your speaker Active Ready as an upgrade, not a side way

But a close fried of mine that's very familiar with Linn, said he not all in on that digital in, digital out Exakt Box!

But sure would love to hear your speakers active with Naim's analog in, analog out Snaxo, Maybe not a Statement but not $240K!

Both of which you Love!

Just some more thoughts!

Enjoy your Hight End System!

Thanks to HH. I followed in his footsteps (most of the way) after a false start, and I am delighted to report that I am a very happy bunny!!
