SuperUniti will not play UPnP from Naim app

Posted by: Klout10 on 22 July 2016

Dear all,

My appologies if this has been covered elsewhere. firt of all: I'm the happy owner of a SuperUniti. I also have a QNAP TS-251 which contains my music in FLAC format. Music on the NAS has been ripped and converted to FLAC with a Naim HDX. Both units are hard-wired to a router (Cisco) which is a standard one as supplied by my internet provider.

Question: I am able to see the NAS and the folder containing the music in the Naim app. Also all cover art is visible. However, when I want to play a certain track or album, It just won't start. Message at the bottom of the app is saying:

"UPnP - Geen Mzk. Track skipped" which is Dutch for""UPnP - No Music Track skipped"

Resetting the app and clearing the UPnP cache does not change anything...

Strange thing is that it is possible to scroll and play music via the front panel buttons of the SuperUniti.

Any thoughts on this matter?

Many regards,

Michel

What UPnP software are you running on the QNAP? The pre-supplied one? If so, you might try Asset first rather than spend a lot of time troubleshooting. If that also fails, then dig into the problem a bit more and do some root cause analysis.

Not strange at all that the Naim App and the SU are different. the app is just a control point but if it doesn't talk with the UPnP server correctly then it won't tell the SU to play the track.

You need to check that FLAC is in the list of formats configured for use by the DLNA Media Server software on the NAS, and that it's not set to transcode to a format that the SU doesn't support.

You may find you need to enable DLNA in the router.

If that doesn't fix it you may also need to enable UPnP in the router.

If that doesn't fix it you can try connecting the SU and NAS to a network switch, and then take an Ethernet cable from that to your router (this is good to do anyway, as it'll will generally make the system more stable in the long term).

The UPnP software which is installed on the NAS is Asset.

Thank you for your suggestions Huge, I know that UPnP is enabled already on the router, I'll check the DLNA settings and see if it is possible to get my hands on a switch for test purposes...

Just to say I have the exact same router and it works fine with my SU. I installed Asset on the Qnap. Not much help apart from to say it is possible!

When you say you see the NAS and the folder in the Naim app, do you mean you go to upnp and then select Asset? I have Asset on 3 devices and it is not always clear which instance of Asset I have chosen - or it wasn't until I gave each version of Asset a meaningful name!

Indeed, when I go to UPnP via the Naim app, I see 1 folder which is called 'music'.

Strangely, when I go to UpnP via the SU front panel, I see 2 folders which are both called 'music'

Installed minimserver on the NAS and everything is working fine now  :-)

Just to explain what happened to you:

The first time you saw a 'bare' QNAP directory, which is unplayable.

Upon installing and activating Minimserver, your SU and Naim app should see it as a server (UPnP). This is the usable one.

Thanx for the exlanation Adam!
