Tellurium Q Black Nait XS2

Posted by: ThatsNotMyNaim on 23 July 2016

Hi all,

I'm having some TQ Black delivered monday on trial. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of it? Especially versus Chord Rumour / XS2 which currently have.

Hoping it tightens/cleans up the bass without losing rhythm and drive...  but also smooths the highs a little.

I loaned: Odyssey, EPIC. NAC A5. Didn't like them.

EPIC was detailed but lazy. Odyssey was tinny and lost all of the bass definition I get with Rumour. Almost lost the bass completely.

Rumour is too thick and heavy in the bass though. Lacks openess and is a bit harsh on vocals.

NAC A5 was dry/bland but punchy and well timed. But the highs were a bit ropey at times. Was tempted but put the rumour back in and felt it was warmer in a nice way.

iMac/Audivarna(WAV library)>Chord Silver Plus USB>Chord 2Qute(TP PSU)>Chord Chameleon VEE3>Nait XS2>Chord Rumour 2 (2 metre pairs)>Proac 118. (All stock Naim power cables).

Atacama Moseco 6 (Plan to replace with Partingtons)

ERIS 5.0

Failing this it's Hi Cap DR time (or other...)

Cheers

Adam

I'm delighted with my TQ black. It's detailed, fast and has a stunning midrange

Excellent. The dealer said he had only ever had one set sent back. Promising.

What abour bass weight? Not too light?

I've had both Chord Rumour and Odyssey 2 and replaced the latter with TQ Black which is much much better than both.  I also replaced the interconnects I had, Chord Anthem Reference, with TQ Black which was better at a lower cost.  One of my best purchases

Get the HiCAP DR

Dayjay, i'm getting ahead of myself but already considering a full TQ switch if it works put with the speaker cable. Good to hear you've had a positive conversion. What were the changes in sound?

John, what can I expect from the DR?

Cheers

It was a bit of a shock to be honest.  Run in time was awful, especially for the interconnects which were horrendous at first, but once it settled in mid range and detail were hugely improved and better lower range but most of all it's just much more musical.  If I remember rightly once it had settled in I moved my speakers because the tonal balance was so different from the Chord.

The TQB speaker cable works very well for me between 250.2 & S400. Much cleaner and more transparent sounding than NACA5 ime. I use 5m runs with factory terminated Tellurium Q plugs.

I replaced Odyssey 4 with TQ Black (NaitXS). Excellent, and a lot easier to hide than Chord.

How about the ultra blacks? Cost a little more but we'll worth the extra outlay

TNMN .. my philosophy is get your boxes in place .. they'll give you the biggest bang for your buck then look at your interconnects.  Full disclosure:  All my interconnects are TQ Ultra Black except for the Din-XLR from my 282 to 250DR and my speakers wires are TQ Black.

£260 a metre. With a Nait XS. Okay.......

Agreed Wenger. The ultra blacks are more costly but what you get is a cable that is head and shoulders above the black. They have a fuller sound. More detail  and a more lifelike presentation. Fantastic to hear!

You'd be surprised at how much is lost with 'lesser' cables! You can clearly hear the improvement even on entry level. Those boxes are better than you think. The costlier cables just let you hear it!

Any thoughts on witchhat ?

Posted on: 23 July 2016 by ThatsNotMyNaim

Witchhat? What's that then?

You guys mentioning TQ Ultra Black but wouldn't that shame my system?

A few have said the harshness may derive from XS2. So I am worried seriously transparent cables will show things up more.

That and the fact Ultra black way too expensive for me at the moment.

See if you can source some S/H TQB and try it. It really is the only way.

Agree with you Finkfan,  the improvement is exceptional, and its a reasonably cost effective upgrade.... but of course it all depends on ones budget....

I don't doubt that the cables are good, it's simply that the money would be better spent elsewhere. TQB would be my choice. I paid £125 for a used 4m pair. That's much better than £2,000.

Well, it seems that at any price TQ cables are well respected. I will post my (amateur) findings next week.

As for Hi Cap DR. What will this bring me? I can't help but feel at the moment that the sound is nice but could be better defined and more expressive?

Posted on: 23 July 2016 by hungryhalibut

I'd try a Flatcap XS rather than a Hicap. Using power supplies from the series above can lead to an over egged sound. You should try both options for yourself of course, as we all prefer different presentations.

The Hi Cap DR is definitely one that needs to be home tested over a prolonged period and there are differing views to what it brings.  On my SN2 I love it and I feel it makes it a complete amp but its very hard to vocalise what it does clearly - in my amateur vocabulary I felt it added additional layers, firmed up the base and made things more solid and believable and I wouldn't be without it, but I know others who have tried it on the same amp and not liked it.

I'd like to try a HC DR on my SN1. Not sure it that should be demoed before the XPS DR on my CDX2 though?

Suggest try both and then keep both.....

How about box first, then cables?
