Headphone + SuperUniti

Posted by: Javi A. on 28 July 2016

Hi to all.

I bougth a BW P7 headphones. Their sound is simply great (I know that there are better options but not closed like this). I also buy the original 5 m plug. It is nice not to need extra plugs/cables to reach my sofa.

I have the SU under the TV and a quite hidden/difficult to reach.  I am thinking on using a DAC/HeadP amp next to my sofa connected via a coax. cable from the SU to the DAC. The instalation cable length will be about 7 meters. Any ideas/sugestion for this setup/cable/DAC?

Thanks for your help :-)

Yes - buy a longer headphone cable

Exactly,  I have used a 3+5 mtr extension lead of good quality and performance

But I see  the issue with SU hided away

I bought the 5 meters option and it is ok, but I do not want to plug/unplug the headpones each time I want to use them. I prefer to "mute" it and use a HP amp each time I want to listen privately.

Sounds like a very convoluted solution.... you will be missing out on the NAIM dac if you run a digital out of your SuperUniti....

Sorry to say that... aren't you overcomplicating things a bit here?

I agree that Iam looking for a bit wired solution, but I want too many things; just mute the speakers with the remote while lisening through the headphones without plugging them in and out. I thought on the SU analog out and a small hp-amp but it is muted with the speakers... other option is to switch speakers off for lisening through the HP-Amp... the I have two volumes the one for the SU and the other from the HP-Amp. The last more user-direct solution is use the SU digital out so I have two independent volumes one for speakers and another for the Headphones.

Javi - a bit more clear now
I would get DAC V-1 then and feed it digitally from SuperUniti. It has a headphone output and can actually serve as a good cornerstone for your second system if you ever decide to build one. I'm not sure if you'll be able to find such a long digital interconnect though (BNC - BNC is the one you'd need).

Not the cheapest solution, but a neat one...

I was thinking in something in that way ;-)

Not the cheapest and more simple but a solution.

The DAC v1 is a relatively expensive and bulky headphone amp for your system. You might consider something like a Little Dot mk3 as a much cheaper option, with a lovely steampunk vibe too.

I agree that perhaps DAC V1 is too much, but the little Dot is only analog and the needed one must be have a digital input.

Hi Javi, I was looking for an improvement from the standard SU headphone output and I settled on a Chord Mojo.

The Mojo is fed from the SU Coaxial output and sits next to me, I can then use a short headphone lead.

Headphone volume is controlled by the Mojo and the speakers are "muted" by turning the master Vol down on the SU.

Of course you will have to listen to the Mojo to see if you consider it an upgrade.

One bonus is that combined with a phone or dedicated music player the Mojo doubles up as my portable sound system.

Good luck with your search.

Forget the bw buy a fostex from massdrop or 900 better, they are easy to drive and go well with even crapy naim headphone output

bws are nice but like what sony seperate componenets is to naim in hifi

try a fostex! Unless you want to invest in a headphone amp

For my taste, the P7 sound really nice. They are easy to drive and sound nicely with when connected to the Superuniti headphones plug. The idea of a expernar DAC/amp is for avoiding to plug them each time I what to use them.

Used units of Hugo and DAC v-1 has similar prices... what do you thing is the best option of both?

Posted on: 31 July 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Javi - both have their advantages.
With a DAC V-1 you can add at a later stage NAP 100 (same sized case) and build a second, digital-only, NAIM system (you never know what the future brings - you may want to have Naim sound in another room).

No doubt they are nice, you can use them as portable as well, i still own one of the first P5s,  give it a try for a Fostex sometime later maybe, mass drop option was 499USD, which is very good for that can. I am not saying fostex are very good but very good with naim amp.

I own 272 and used headphone output with HD800, LCD2 and Sony Z7 non of these performed well as Fostex Massdrop TH-X00, 900 will be even better, they are easy to drive so Naim headphone output can drive them, but the sound is excellent for a streamer/pre/headphone amp unit.

DAC v1 is a decent Dac/amp, i listen them with Fostex 900s, it was very good, for what you pay for they are million better alternatives to DAC V1 for headphone only listening but it can be a nice second system advantage as Adam mentioned if you need one.

Hugo for sure that can drive almost everything and dac performance is very good.  It al depends on your headphones, while i like Hugo with LCD2, HD800s are little bit too bright/analytical with Hugo.

Also depending on your house envoirment open cans could be impossible, thats why i bought a Fostex. They are the best closed ones that i listen so far ( 900s ).

Mojo is a good setup with a single computer, phone or a DAP, they also then drive almost everything so don't let the size fool you

In pictures looks like mojo input is a mini-jack. How to you convert a standard RCA to that jack? What about the SU side. Do you use the BNC2BNC conector that cames with the SU?

I can not publish the link but you can go to chord electronics mojo manual and see all details.

In particular mojo has 3 inputs coax, micro usb, optical and 2x 3.5mm headphone outputs. Also has a micro usb to charge it in the same side of the other inputs.

Posted on: 02 August 2016 by Erich

Don't  have a SU but looking at an image it seems it has coax and optical outputs that you could use to connect the mojo.

I said that becouse the SU has a BNC digital output and the mojo has a "strange" 3.5 jack digital input, so no standard BNC in any side :-(
