Phono stage, oh and making use of a snaps
Posted by: Wayne D on 29 July 2016
I want to buy a phono stage, was thinking that the new Rega Aria might be a good buy, but am now thinking the Moon 310LP is the way to go. Any comments, any other more suitable phono stage?, has anyone heard these ..... Also could I use an old snaps to power the 310LP...... My system is - LP12, Lingo, HiCap, 250 & 72 with ATC SCM11 speakers.......
Wayne, as to your question about using an old SNAPS on the Moon, I think that's a question best posed to them - even if the voltage is compatible (the Moon website doesn't seem to publish the DC voltage input requirement), its use may well invalidate any warranty, so do your homework before committing.
Alternatively consider a secondhand Naim Prefix. This could be powered from your SNAPS if it has been dual-railed, or else consider the superior Hicap as a better alternative supply. This is ideal for use in the LP12 although note Prefixes were only made for MC cartridges.
I used a SNAPS on a Stageline once, made for a very good inexpensive phono stage.
Hi Wayne,
If your LP12 is fitted with a Dynavector cartridge, then I would (and did) buy a Dynavector P75 phono stage. It has been designed to work with a DV cartridge and works beautifully with one.
If you use a different cartridge, then the obvious alternatives include a Naim Stageline or Prefix, the new Trilogy 906, Rega Aria, Lehmann Black Cube, NVA Phono 2 and a number of others. The Moon 310LP is probably a step up, especially when powered by the 320 external power supply.
There does seem to be important musical synergy between certain cartridges and certain phono stages. Some pairings work beautifully while others are just a near miss.
I would suggest a chat with your Linn dealer.
Hope this helps, FT
+1 for Foot tapper.
i use a Stageline powered by an old olive Hicap for my LP12 and Dynavector xx2 and it seems to work really together. At least the vinyl still easily outperforms my CDX2

Yes indeed thankyou.... Benz wood is just being run in as we speak...
I think it is going to be the MOON ..... it sounds more effortless, more relaxed than the REGA..?

Oh. In that case, I might have to buy one as well...

Wayne,
The Moon is likely to be very good, since most of their stuff is. I haven't heard it, but if you are considering phono stages at that price level, I would also listen if at all possible to the Trigon Advance, which I am using very successfully with my Dynavector MC cartridge. The Trigon (like the Hugo I also own) is battery powered, the external power supply being simply used to trickle charge the battery.
The unit can play music for around 10 hours on a full battery charge, but can be switched to trickle charge while playing if the battery is running low (the Advance indicates this by a warning light) with only a very subtle change in sound quality.
