if you could rename a Naim product...?

Posted by: ken c on 29 July 2016

don't know whether this belongs here -- but here we go anyhow.

in an idle moment -- i started wondering what name i would choose if i was ever in a position to rename the NAP500. Demonstrating my total lack of creativity, i could only come up with 'Thunder'.

somehow, i think there would be no need to rename the 'Nait' -- very apt 'name' -- so perhaps left as is.

but perhaps 'Spring' for the NAP300? oh dear...

just for fun, i would be interested in what alternative name(s) you would choose for any naim product(s).

enjoy...

Hot knife" for the Naim dac.  But a proper butter knife, like a flat spoon that's not sharp.

Nakered"  Naims venerable speaker wire.

I have to wonder how the 'Flatcap' name passed through marketing. 'Multicap' or 'Duocap' seem more apt to me, but maybe Naim did not want to discourage its use as a lone PSU upgrade. Still, call it anything but flat.

On a rational level, absolutely right Randy. But I see Flatcap as a glimpse of Salisbury humour. Some Brits wear flat caps. Some North Americans wear baker boys.

Flatcap is possibly my favourite Naim product "naim" because of its humour - but it only works if you get it, and otherwise appears very bizarre.

They should have called the 272 the justasgoodasa282andmilesbetterthana202andyougetafreestreamertoo, to avoid any arguments.

They might have had a trade descriptions issue with that HH, and the case is a bit small too

I would have re-named the Ariva.

There's a popular caravan called the Ariva.

I rest my case...

I would like to rename the Aro as Resurgam

I think the XPS2 should be renamed "Fuse Blower Delight".

Posted on: 30 July 2016 by gary yeowell

Except my 9 year old XPS2 has never blown a single fuse.

The obvious one to me (although sadly no longer made) would be nSats. Naim Small Monitors would have been more appropriate. They're considerably more than a mere satellite speaker.

Gary,

Well clearly your mileage may vary

Mine regularly blows fuses, so much so that I dread turning the darn thing off and always have a spare fuse in hand for the next eventuality.  It seems to be about 50/50 on my chances.  I had to power down yesterday as our power was temporarily turned off due to having a new meter installed (not smart meter - yay!).  I got lucky that time.

It once blew a fuse so spectacularly that the glass tube was shattered into lots of tiny pieces.  Oh what fun it was trying to clear out sharp fragments of glass from the fuse holder...

I'm glad for you if you don't have the same problem!

Graham

Graham, it would seem that there are some rogue XPS2s out there. Bummer for those owners i'm sure! but it certainly isn't the norm. My previous 555PS did blow several fuses in my year of ownership.

along the same lines, the NAP250 should probably be renaimed:

"nowthatswhaticallanamplifier"

as apparently, this is what Ivor T of Linn remarked first time he heard it.

but i think the forum can dream up a really good alternative name for this classic?

A good rule is don't name any commercial product ever as it will mean something detrimental, vulgar or just plain silly somewhere in the world.  The car world is a rich picking ground for this   ........  Nova,  Pajero,  LaCrosse, LaPunta    I'll leave you with the translations.

Nap Dr - what is that,  a doctor that sings nice lullabies at 3 o'clock in the afternoon ?

Posted on: 30 July 2016 by Haim Ronen

The Statement should be renamed Luna, short for lunacy.

Some?  Based on common understanding of the problem on this forum, I thought some=quite a lot!

Posted on: 30 July 2016 by gary yeowell

Well Graham, i have maybe read 3 or 4 posts in all the time i've been on here and i don't consider that a lot at all. Now, humming psu's, that's a different story.
