Weak sound from lp12
Posted by: Martin Morgan on 04 August 2016
hi all , seem to be suffering from a lack of dynamics and gain on my lp12 ,system is lp12 ittok 10 x cartridge feding a72 pre all serviced etc ,any ideas why ,regards
Output from DV10x5 is low by modern MM standards. A solution is to turn the vol knob to 12 where it was previously at 10.30, for example.

Not lack of volume but a lack of power .my cdx provides this
Shouldn't have this problem with the components mentioned, was it performing then deteriorated or has something been changed? A visit to an LP12 specialist required methinks.
Deck was set by Peter swain a few months ago so should be I fine fettle .perhaps CD I just edging it for my ears regards
How about a new cartridge as per your topic of a month ago?

Yes going to give a high output mm a try perhaps Linn adikt as it's output is alot more
Could the tracking weight been knocked/adjusted without your knowledge? Perhaps it's running a little light?
Vinyl is normally slightly lower in output to digital but that does tend to depend on cartridge. Is this a recent deterioration? Do you mean lack of volume or dynamics?

Lindsay
In addition to tracking weight and (severe) bias errors, it's worth just checking for arm bearing adjustment (too tight or too loose) or contamination of the bearings and any looseness developing in the cartridge > arm > sub-chassis fixing, as these can cause a loss of dynamics, detail and/or distortion.
Thanks for replys guys. Peter checked arm etc all seemed fine for want of a better word I just sounds weak .playing Sheffield steel by Joe cocker the snare drum sounds weak etc and I regard this album as a good allround test for my system
Okay no way should Sheffield Steel sound lacklustre!! I'm afraid to say somewhat controversially that the key reason I didn't choose a Linn was the lack of dynamics. Modern upgrades like the Keel do improve it but it's for this reason amongst others that I went for an alternative.
Hi Martin,
in addition to all previous suggestions, a cartridge with a worn or clogged suspension comes to my mind.
Cartridge new when deck set up lads
What power supply are you using for the Linn? The issue you describe could be down to a lingo needing attention.
Willy.
Serviced Valhalla
If your 'table was like this from the day it was set up, I think Christopher is on the right track. The 10x5 has a relatively low output compared to typical MM cartridges like the Adikt or the Ortofon 2Ms. Assuming a, even slightly, lowish gain from the phono boards inside the 72 (you are using those?) you will end with a sluggish sounding thingy. Turning up the volume will make it louder, but still as sluggish. If the sound has deteriorated, I'd still say clogged suspension.

Hello Martin,
I set up your deck back in September 2103.
The output of the 10X5 is 2.5mV and although less than a normal MM, this high output MC works well into a Naim MM board.
The Valhalla you are using was serviced by Darran @ ClassA and they normally work well. - Whilst talking about Darran, when was your 72 and it's 322 phono boards last serviced?
I have no memory of checking out your deck for you recently but I'm certainly happy for you to arrange a time to come in to our new shop and preferably with your 72 and CDX so as you can show me exactly what the issue is. In this way, it should be relatively easy to pin down what's going on and get you looked after.
Please note however that I'm taking a short holiday in France from tomorrow and then travelling to the USA to help a few clients. I return to the UK on the 26th and you can arrange a date/time after this date to pop in with your equipment. Just email or call my staff while I'm away to arrange this as I will have limited access to emails over the next 3 weeks or so I guess.
Kind regards,
Peter
Thanks Peter .that is very kind offer it would be nice to sort it .my 72 was serviced by Darren a few months ago so should Be in fine form. regaeds martin

Thank for the input guys .looks like Peter is willing to help me out good dealers are few and in between he is a good one .regards martin
Just an update lads ,tried my old project phono stage today and what a revelation more gain 11 o'clock lots of grunt and much more dynamic .lp12 sounding great ,something must be wrong with my phono boards ,regards
Compared to even modest contemporary phono stages, the Naim boards are lacking , imo. Save the cash on servicing them and buy a new phono stage, better vfm .
