Why Pink Floyd?

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 09 August 2016

Yup, my name is Bruce, I am a 50 something male, I spend lots of money on Naim HiFi and I really cannot get why so many people adore and obsess over 'Floyd. Sure DSOTM was pretty original and striking but I will listen to it once every few years at most. Much of their other output (I own a Greatest Hits double CD) seems uneven, occasionally bombastic or just plain odd. 'the song 'Wish You were here' is quite fun.

There, I'm out of the closet. I feel better.

Or maybe there is a PF album that will convince me otherwise?

Anyway I loved early Jethro Tull and still own everything more or less everything they/he has done so who am I to comment!

That last one is a new one on me - thanks in return, I'll check it out!

The website for NPR All Songs is good but I really enjoy the Podcast. Most weeks it is new music but some are single artist or magazine type editions. Last week was an interesting long interview with Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood-one of the more articulate musicians.

The related NPR pages include First Listen (whole album streams usually 2 weeks prior to release, about 3-4 per week added) and the Tiny Desk Concerts. These are cool little 3-4 song gigs unplugged in the office of NPR at, ahem, a tiny desk. Often great fun.

Why any favourite band?
I personally have never "got" The Smiths, nor Joy Division, nor Rihanna, nor Chris De Burgh and very many other top selling bands/artists.

That's the joy of music, one persons favourite doesn't even register with someone else.

I do however, LOVE Pink Floyd. Not everything they've done but the majority connects with me.

It's a connection in any way, which makes me feel good when I hear music, regardless of the artist or genre.

Got to agree.

personally I love Pink Floyd. Gilmour is the main man for me which is probably why the Division Bell album is probably my favourite.

oh and I can't figure out why I've started to really like the smiths in recent months. Always hated them as I was growing up. Shows how our tastes change as we get older

In answer to the question, because it is (mostly) great music, although I don't much care for last year's release of rearranged out-takes.

I assumed Endless River and the unreleased material in the new box set are copyright releases.
