How do you tag 2CD's in your collection?

Posted by: Klout10 on 10 August 2016

Now that I'm used to used to the SuperUniti and the QNAP, I have something which keeps me busy...

With the HDX all my 2CD albums like Pink Floyds 'The Wall' were ripped as follows:

1st CD: Pink Floyd - The Wall

2nd CD: Pink Floyd - The Wall [CD2]

Using the Naim app, I 'see' two albums. Now I'm also using a tool called mp3tag and it seems possible to re-tag all files into a single album ...

I wonder how you guys deal with this, any thoughts are much appreciated :-)

I don't bother, a double CD is a double CD,  & "The Wall" is a classic & I feel its sacrosanct to change it.  When I want to play both back to back I just clue up up one behind the other.   But prompted by your post I have just done it using  mp3tag.

All thats needed is to edit track numbers:  First - COPY & paste both to your PC & work on the editing on the PC.  If you do bugger it up you still have the originals to go back to.

Work on each "CD" folder separately (don't combine them at this stage).    Edit the "Track" number to be sequential as shown below,  also change the "Discnumber"  in each folder from 1/2 & 2/2 into 1/1 in both.

The Wall CD 1/2
Track 1/13
Track 2/13
Track 3/13  ......... etc
The Wall CD 2/2
Track 1/13
Track 2/13
Track 3/13 ......... etc

Edit to
Track 1/26
Track 2/26
Track 3/26

.............

Track 14/26
Track 15/26
Track 16/26

Then copy & paste both (combine) "CD's" into one folder (temporally name it to differentiate it from the original CD's)  & copy it to your NAS.  Check it plays OK & then its OK delete the original copies if you want & change the temporary name.   I renamed mine "The Wall - Combined 2 CD" ;  it shows that when browsing, but only shows "The Wall" on the app when playing,  so I'm leaving it as that.

I don't know if it works the same with the HDX, but on my NAS I do the following:

Rename the first disc's folder to Disc1 and the second disc's folder to Disc2 (leaving the Tracknumber tags as they are and the Discnumber tags as 1/2 and 2/2), then place them both in a folder called Pink Floyd - The Wall. The app concatenates all tracks and displays one album in 'Album View' (with all tracks in the correct double album order) and will show Disc1 and Disc2 as separate folders in 'Folder View'.

I guess YMMV depending on the server software configuration, but it works for me.

The only reason that multiple CD sets have many physical discs is that all of the music doesn't fit on one disc. I mean, really, bits of vinyl have two sides. Do people break their sets into individual sides? Simulate the flipping somehow?

I rip multi-discs into one folder and just use the disc flag to label as 1/3 2/3 3/3 and everything simply works.

For me, it's about replicating the actual physical media. I'm a bit OCD like that.

Plus it keeps track order correct for 'dumber' devices that don't support the disc number tag - my car stereo, for example.

Tnx guys!

Since my music collection for listening is curated I combine the tunes I like from both CDs into one folder.

My backup has both CDs containing all the tunes in their original format. If for some reason I suddenly decide I like a tune that I previously did not I simply add it to the curated folder. This way when I play random tunes I'm sure to only get the good stuff and no filler.

I use MP3tag for tagging, Foobar for adding replay gain and for listening on the computer and LMS for streaming/playback (with Roon looming for the near future)

Using Metadatics. I change the track numbers for the second disc to continue from the first and then turn them into one disc. Same for many 3-disc opera sets.

I also have tagged everything in numbers behind each other as one album, but mime server seems to have problems with it and still shows it as two. Others like Twonky etc properly deal with it....

I also use the sequential track numbering system to create a single disc. This can be done at the ripping stage using dBpoweramp which has a track number offset option.

Use minimserver which handles multi-discalbums properly...

Life's too short! I just make sure the titles are identical with disc 1 and 2 after them so that they appear together and if I want to listen to both, add them to the play queue.

I rely on taging from the CD lookup - most of the time double albums are correctly labled

I use a MAC + Audirvana to render and store my dig collection, but as a reference:

Artist folder: Pink Floyd

Album folder 1: The Wall (Disc 1)

Album folder 2: The Wall (Disc 2)

Metadata:

Artist = Album Artist: Pink Floyd

Disc: 1 or 2,  Out Of: 2

I use Metadatics to edit metadata. Very easy and allow changes for the tracks you select.

I agree life is too short. My Unitiserve seems to handle the tags ok and all I have to do is listen.

This is what I do.  But of course if you're using the HDX or UnitiServe to rip, that's not an option as  you cannot use an external program to edit the files.

But I prefer "The Wall" to NOT appear twice in my Naim App UI, so I do tag it as one album, and edit the track numbers so that they run 1-20-something, and thus look like one album.

I change the track numbers for discs 2+ in iTunes and turn all of them into one album. But this thread reminded me of seperating Johnny Cashs "Unchained"-Box back into 5 discs. This one makes no sense as a single album for me.

Depends on whether the discs are seperated by a theme or not. If something like Joe Bonamassa at Red Rocks, then as a concert it makes sense to rip both CDs as part of one large album, which in something like EAC is fairly simple as you flag the second disc as disc 2 and let it continue the track numbers on from where they left off. Your UpNP server just deliver one big 2 hour album.

On the other hand, something like Prince's Emancipation clearly has 3 themed discs so ripping them as seperate "<title> (disc 1)" and "<title> (disc 2)" and so on makes more sense. Ultimately I don't see it as a technical issue but an artistic one. Does it make more sense on an album by album basis to rip as one or seperate? (rhetorical).

Bad news. I just downloaded a set of 100 Rock 'n' Roll classics. Four hours of music. It should be on at least four discs shouldn't it. What should I do?

Not quite sure what your question is.  Just (re) tag it however you like.  If you want to have it appear as one big 'album' - do that.  Make the album name exactly the same for all 100 tracks, and just manually renumber them 1-100.

Same here :-)

Play it on shuffle.
