This great album,

On  MFSL  vinyl  is going cheap at hmv.uk at the mo.

Stu, I just picked up that very B52s album as a sealed original - it sounds great!

Funnily enough I was tempted by some of the new MFSLs, in spite of the fact that I haven't been able to get on with any of the Original Master Recording series (and I'm on a self imposed vinyl buying ban - failing miserably), finding them curiously unengaging compared against originals. As my system has improved over the years, so the MFSLs seem to have gotten worse.  Very clean, quiet and initially impressive, but with inferior pitch and timing to these ears. Weird.

Anyway, I've resisted getting any of the silvers so far. I note that many of the new silver series don't come from the original master tapes.  Has anyone tried them yet?  Debs, I noted that you received some the other day, what do you think?

I think there may some truth in that, Richard.

I saw your original copy of B-52’s you purchased from the charity shop and at the time felt far too envious to say anything to be honest.

I’ve never heard an original vinyl version to compare, but i’d say my MFSL version is very "clean&quiet" but not as punchy as I was expecting, and even though new it may sound better after a good clean, the static did not come free of charge, launching my platter-mat into orbit on both A & B sides.

However, my Dead Can Dance MFSL vinyl impresses greatly in the bass moody moments, they have very good pressings musically although not so quiet for pips & pops here and there…

I think the MFSL is merely a good attempt at manufacturing good audiophile vinyl, but with varying degrees of success and failure.

The best ‘new’ vinyl I enjoy is on Legacy (Sony) Label.

Many of the new Jimi Hendrix are, good value for money too, and they sound almost as good as my older Hendrix on the MCA label.

Debs thanks.  Yes, apologies about the B52s find.  I guess it was just my turn to have a lucky day.  Frankly I was most surprised to find that it was only the albums I rather fancied that were the sealed ones.  The opened Carpenters and Abba LPs I passed on...

A bit of googling shows that the Dead Can Dance MFSL was taken from the master tapes, so that may account for the sound.  However, I still think there's something not quite right with MFSLs, although I guess I'll have to try some of the new Silvers to see if that's still the case.  It's a great shame because the packaging on the MFSLs, especailly the early issues, was superb, as were the JVC vinyl pressings - still up there with the very best I've seen.  My first were Genesis Trick of The Tail, Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon, and Al Stewart Year of The Cat.  I can still remember the thrill of opening them up for the first time and playing them on my Sony PSX-800 turntable.  I thought they sounded fantastic.  And over the years I bought more but gradually I began to realise that something wasn't right.  It was a back to back listening session I undertook with a Naim distributor one evening that confirmed it - against the originals, or even later normal issues, the MFSLs had lost something fundamental in the "engagement" department. I sold off a number of my MFSLs after that, but still kept a few, in particular those first three, for old times sake, if nothing else.

But I don't want to be too down on MFSL.  They have advanced the art of pressing and packaging and for that we should be thankful.  It's good to see MFSL back from the dead, and while I so so want to love them, I just wish I knew why these days they don't engage me like they should.
