Eminem is the first artist to sell 1 million digital copies of a single album

"This week Eminem became the first artist to sell 1 million digital copies of a single album. Physical album sales may be down 11 percent--that's the bad news--but digital album sales are in fact up 19 percent, so maybe downloading (at least the legal kind) isn't killing music after all.

Eminem's aptly titled Recovery passed the 1 million digital mark this week; of this milestone, his manager Paul Rosenberg declared in a happy statement: "Over the years, we've made a concerted effort to engage Em's online fanbase, so this achievement is especially rewarding." Lady Gaga's The Fame is close to joining Eminem, with more than 900,000 digital sales and counting, but it's looking likely that Adele will actually be the next member of the million-album-download club, since her sophomore smash 21 has already sold a whopping 992,000 digital copies in just 19 weeks."

Think of a world where on iTunes Miles Davis has a million downloads of Bitches Brew its happening now in a parallel universe that none of us have access to. But one day I will build a portal to this world and we can all leave and live in a musical paradise where Lady Gaga and M&M do not exist, sweet dreams.

I am not a fan of rap, but I think Eminem writes interesting lyrics, and the rhythmic, perhaps even percussive delivery of his vocal is excellent. Not my type of music, so I wouldn't buy it, but I do respect his work.

As for what I have heard of Lady Gaga, I have found to be complete trash. Her Christmas single is one of the worst pieces of (choose your own expletive) recorded. I also think that someone who wears a dress made of meat, or specifically animals that have been killed just so that she can think she is being clever for one evening is utterly contemptible.

Still Miles was no saint, but at least he strived to create great music, new and often challenging. I could imagine him working with Eminem if he were alive today (although his rap album Doo Bop is not part of my Miles collection), I could not imagine him working with Gaga.

do you know if there is any way of finding out how many digital download albums have been sold by specified artists, or do we have to rely on reports from labels etc?

Is it a good album? I bought Curtain Call; The Hits tonight in the Tesco sale section. It's brilliant.
